How do I explain to people who say banning gay marriage is the same denial of civil rights as was banning interracial marriage?

Interracial marriage is between a man and a woman and gay marriage is not.

A man and a woman can reproduce together by nature (the fact that a couple cannot don’t change that it is possible for others, and their relation is ordered toward it). Two people of the same sex cannot.

We can only compare situations that are comparable and choose to treat equally situations that are equals.

A man is not a woman and vice et versa.

There is no difference between a black man and a white man. There is a huge difference between men and women. Interracial marriage and gay marriage aren’t the same thing at all.

First question for you, what type of relationship do you have with other person in this debate? What is the reason for an explanation?

Discuss how shapes work.

The Cylinder and a Cube that has a hole. (Reproductive System)
Gay marriage violates the nature of shapes, while interracial marriage does not violate the nature of shapes.
Notice how I have no long documents or big words.

This is what your debaters are going to say:
That is pretty ridiculous. There are plenty of other oracles which will accomodate a cylindrical shaped object.

Is the person saying that okay with say for example a father and son “marrying”?

How is not allowing them to “marry” different from banning interracial marriage?

So, do you think that what you wrote would be convincing to the people who wrote and passed the laws banning interracial marriage? I don’t agree, of course, but I’m sure that many people did not think that an interracial marriage between 1 man and 1 woman is perfectly fine and did not think that interracial marriage is what God intended and that’s why they passed laws to ban it. And I’m almost certain that they probably quoted Scripture to justify these laws. And I probably wouldn’t have found their arguments any more convincing than the arguments against same-sex marriage now.

You could come up with an arbitrary reason for one and not the other and there is nothing you could do about it.

Actually the only time in Scripture where interracial marriage is mentioned and people are talking against it, " LORD’s wrath flared against them" (Moses’ wife was a Cushite, Ethiopian.)

As others have said, SSM and interracial marriage are not comparable in any way. Marriage is between a man and a woman. One fits that definition, the other doesn’t. It is not the same denial of civil rights in any tangible way.

Umm… ask them to demonstrate how “man + woman” – of any race – isn’t different from “man + man” or “woman + woman”…? 🤔

As you’ve pointed out, it all comes down to the definition of marriage. If different people have different definitions of marriage, they’re not going to agree about what a marriage is. But from a legal standpoint, the Supreme Court has decided that civil marriage does not have to be between a man and a woman.

I wouldn’t even bother trying to explain. If they’re Catholic they should already understand.
