I am trying to understand the idea of covenant and the ramifications of the covenant if it is broken. Is it true to say that the penalty for the breaking of the covenant between man and God (with Adam and Eve, Abraham, etc…) is death? Is the covenant in Gen 15 a sign of this death, in that the one who breaks the covenant will also be put to death in the manner that the animals wee sacrificed? That the one who breaks the covenant must die and it is man who broke the covenant with God so man must die? But instead, God became man to be the perfect sacrifice and it is Jesus who dies for man and institutes the New Covenant?

Also, are there official Church documents on the internet that address this teaching?

You’ve got the right idea, but I doubt that there is any official Church teaching on the matter.
