Gender-Bender Manga?

I see sometimes on pinterest where they post pictures of male characters drawn as female. That’s all I know about it.

It’s a genre where the typical roles of male and female are actively reversed or “bended.” This can be anywhere from a hyper masculinized/feminized female/male to cross-dressing to dual personalities.

Some examples are Ramna 1/2 and I My Me! Strawberry Eggs. Most that I’ve seen and read have also been categorized as comedy with a bit of romance.

Can anyone tell me about this genre, please?
I’m not sure there are enough stories forcused on it for it to be a genre, but I guess it’d be any story where a man turns into a woman or vice versa. The ones I’ve seen do that by use of magic (or sufficiently advance science that is indistinguishable from magic). I guess you could count stories about trans characters, but that’s generally not described as “gender-bending” as far as I know. 🤷

As far as I’ve seen, it’s rarely the main premise of a work. Often you’ll get a chapter or arc where characters have to switch genders, but it’s not like there are a ton of stories actually focused on gender-bending. I suppose the first such thing that comes to mind is Ranma 1/2.

And as Oren noted, it’s a fairly common phenomenon in fan art.

So…is it harmless?
It depends on the work. Certainly there are stories that treat gender in problematic ways, and there’s probably some hentai with gender benders in it. But the event itself doesn’t mean the show is harmful or dirty. I haven’t seen Ranma 1/2, but I understand that it’s mostly a comedy. I would say the same of the gender-bending chapter in Soul Eater; it’s a funny event that happens and is then forgotten.

Overall, yes, I generally consider it pretty harmless.

okay, that’s a relief.

i think it means that their is gay and lesbians in the manga.:)::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce:

Common enough to get a name! 😃 Rule 63.

But yeah. Most often, it’s a guy being turned into a girl for comedy. You don’t typically see serious plots, only one-arc gags. And you don’t see girls becoming guys nearly as often. (Also codified as a rule of the internet)

And sometimes, shows even do really creative things with it. It’s Western animation, not anime/manga, but Adventure Time on Cartoon Network has a few episodes featuring Fiona and Cake instead of Finn and Jake. It’s actually a pretty creative idea, considering how prevalent gender-bending fanfiction is, and that it’s actually presented as such in the show’s universe.
