General Confession

After coming back to the Catholic Church after a period of absenceand having never been to confession I need to confess my sins in a general confession.

I have read we need to confess the number of times we have committed a sin. The trouble is for many of the sins I have found through an examination of conscience I cannot put a figure to either through inadequate memory or having done it so often when I was away from Church.

At the moment all I have is a list of sins that I have come up with through an examination of my conscience.

I want to be free of my sins, is there anything else I need to do to make a proper confession?

you do what you have done, now just go, if it makes you less nervous, call and make an appointment so you don’t feel rushed. You do your best to remember every mortal sin, how often, or how frequent and for a general confession how recently–as in, it is an ongoing problem, or something from your youth that you have overcome.

There is no absolute requirement for a valid confession to give a precise number, despite what you may have heard. The requirement is to make a genuine effort to remember and confess all mortal sins in kind and number. If you have made an examination of conscience prayerfully you have already done it, so don’t delay any longer, just get to confession. If the priest needs more info during confession he will ask for it. Be at peace.

We are obliged to confess all mortal sins in number and kind (and circumstances that change the sin…like it was my Father I murdered). Venial sins do not have to be confessed (though it is recommended to confess at least some!) Venial sins do not have to be given in any numbers…though it can be good for some…

If one does not know the number of mortal sins after one has made a good examination of conscience one can give an approximation…such as if one knows it was usually 2-3 times a week for the last 10 years one says that…or if one know it was around 10-15 times…one says that. or if all one can say is Many times or alot…etc

(If one say thinks it was 3 murders and later you realize it was 10 …one mentions that in the next confession for it was more than what one thought…or if one forgets (not hides!) a mortal sin…one says it in the next confession as well)

Already made an appt for 20TH June

I think since I am confessing living to the worlds standards for several years, precise numbers are going to be out of the question for most of the sins. I will just have to order them by most to least.

If you can not give the actual numbers…you give approximations…even if all one can say is many many times.
