When a family member was dying and no longer able to communicate, his priest offered a general forgiveness for any unconfessed sins at the time of the annointing of the sick, the last day of my relative’s life. He had been a very decent and honest man but had drifted from church and as he became elderly and old, could not physically attend Mass any longer once he wished to return.
The priest explained to us essentially that our loved one would die in a state of Grace given this blanket forgiveness he was given.
As comforting as this was to hear, it confused me as well. He explained some church rule but we had been awake for days and it didn’t register with me. Can anyone shed any light for me?
