Go to vatican.va and download a copy of Redemptionis Sacramentum, Rome’s latest attempt to get disobedient, I’ll-do-it-my- way priests to comply with Church Law regarding the liturgy. It is very explicit, a follow-up to the GIRM.

dhgray,

Before you go on a rampage and accuse your priest of defiant abuse, keep in mind that sometimes, the rubrics can be dispensed. For example, my priest has bad knees and does not genuflect as prescribed in the rubrics. He has dispensation from his superior.

I suggest you inform yourself and when you suspect abuse, use the following protocol or something like it that approaches the situation with charity.

Effective Lay Witness Protocol

No worries Dave,
I just never really understood what all the fuss was about…now I have some reading to do.

Two very important documents, in my opinion, that people have long forgotten that every other document after Vatican II has come from, including the imfamous “Redemptus Sacramentum”, which should be required reading of all liturgist and anyone that does ministry within the parish and around the diocease.

“The Constitution On The Sacred Liturgy”, and “The Dogmatic Constitution On The Church”. And befoe anyone starts by pointing to various passages within it to prove “see I was right”, it is important to note, there have been several language changes and interpretations from the original authors of the documents over the years. As a matter of fact, one of the people heavenly involved in the construction of “The Constitution On The Sacred Liturgy” gave a workshop on the 40th anniversary of the document. Very informative.

Are they any links to the workshop content?

I would encourage anyone interested in the proper celebration of the mass to read both the GIRM and Redemptionis Sacramentum before going to your priest or liturgy committee with a complaint. Sadly, many people are unaware of the existence of these documents. Our parish developed the tradition of having laypeople give homilies, something strictly forbidden by Redemptionis Sacramentum. Our new priest put a stop to it and some people flipped out. It comes down to one of two things–either ignorance of what the church has officially approved, or an outright willingness to disobey the church. Hopefully it’s the former case and not the latter, otherwise you will have some big problems.

You mean your parish allowed a serious abuse…

I bought both Books 1 & 2 from the USCCB last year and I am dissapointed in that they are very vague. Even when I read through RS, that is more broad than I would like to see.

Ted,

There are footnotes, which may help you.

Exactly what do you need clarified? Deacon Ed is very knowledgable about norms.
