Hello all. My fiancee and I are planning our wedding ceremony. It is a Catholic wedding outside of Mass. Does anybody know if the General Intercessions (Prayers of the Faithful) are necessary or are they an optional part of the ceremony?

I’ve always seen them at wedding Masses, though the Intercessions are usually reworded to be about the couple, family life, etc. (this could just be a local tradition, though.)

However, if there’s no Mass, why would you need General Intercessions? 🙂

The marriage is celebrated within a Liturgy of the Word so the General Intercessions would be used. The Rite itself offers several different choices of Intercessions which the couple can customize.

Got it! You learn something new every day. Thanks for the information. I remember sitting with my mother and doing those “customizations” not so long ago… 👍

So they are optional at a Nuptial Mass?

They are always optional but when’s the last time you attended a Mass that didn’t have them?

GIRM 69 says
It is desirable that there usually be such a form of prayer in Masses celebrated with the people, so that petitions maybe offered for holy Church, for those who govern with authority over us, for those weighed down by various needs, for all humanity, and for the salvation of the whole world.
My response was to the suggestion that if it wasn’t during Mass there would be no need for General Intercessions. But outside of Mass usually means “Liturgy of the Word” and that usually includes the intercessions. Why would you leave them out?

Intentions for wedding masses in our parish always include successful marriage and family life for the couple, with the lector mentioning the names of the bride and groom in these intentions.

I’ve been to a number of OF masses with no Intercessions (always on weekdays of course).
Why would you leave them out?
My fiancee and I don’t necessarily want to leave them out, but we are trying to plan a ceremony that is both God-centered and succinct, so we are trying to figure out which points of the service we have options in so that we can finish planning. The General Intercessions is the last thing we were trying to figure out the “rules” on.

Thank you everybody for your help!
