Okay. Someone please explain this to me in the Catholic POV.
So when folks die, their souls, or spirits are supposed to go to one of 3 places?
Heaven
Purgatory
Hell
Am I correct so far?
Then how does the General Resurrection play into this scheme?
Jesus is supposed to return one day, on Earth in a physical form and raise the dead into living bodies? So, if you’ve been hanging out in Heaven for a hundred years or so, then would your soul or spirit get sucked out of Heaven and sent into a body? Would it be your old body that is just bones by now? Or, I guess, it would have to be a new one, but, then where does that new body come from? See, what I mean? It’s VERY confusing if you think about it.
If Jesus does come back again…then what happens?
He said in the Gospels that he was going to institute the kingdom of God right here on Earth the first time that he was here. What happened to him then? Did his plans get screwed up? If he does come back again, will he raise the dead and then people will start popping out of graves like something from a George Romero movie? Then peace and understanding will suddenly take over? It doesn’t seem very plausible to me. If everyone starts coming back to life and they dont die any more, the Earth will soon be too full of people to be inhabitable.
If you think of all of this in magical terms, it all makes sense. But, once you start thinking of it all in practical ways…it make NO sense whatsoever. Sorry for thinking about it, but, I’m trying to use my sense of Reason, and Reason tells me otherwise.
Any thoughts, opinions, complaints?
Thanks.
Please don’t take the easy way out by saying it’s all a miracle or something lame like that.

THE PARTICULAR JUDGMENT:

CCC 1021 Death puts an end to human life as the time open to either accepting or rejecting the divine grace manifested in Christ. The New Testament speaks of judgment primarily in its aspect of the final encounter with Christ in his second coming, but also repeatedly affirms that each will be rewarded immediately after death in accordance with his works and faith. The parable of the poor man Lazarus and the words of Christ on the cross to the good thief, as well as other New Testament texts speak of a final destiny of the soul–a destiny which can be different for some and for others.

CCC 1022 Each man receives his eternal retribution in his immortal soul at the very moment of his death, in a particular judgment that refers his life to Christ: either entrance into the blessedness of heaven-through a purification or immediately, – or immediate and everlasting damnation.

At the evening of life, we shall be judged on our love.

THE LAST JUDGMENT:

CCC 1038 The resurrection of all the dead, “of both the just and the unjust,” will precede the Last Judgment. This will be “the hour when all who are in the tombs will hear [the Son of man’s] voice and come forth, those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.” Then Christ will come “in his glory, and all the angels with him. . . . Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left. . . . And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

CCC 1039 In the presence of Christ, who is Truth itself, the truth of each man’s relationship with God will be laid bare. The Last Judgment will reveal even to its furthest consequences the good each person has done or failed to do during his earthly life:

All that the wicked do is recorded, and they do not know. When “our God comes, he does not keep silence.”. . . he will turn towards those at his left hand: . . . “I placed my poor little ones on earth for you. I as their head was seated in heaven at the right hand of my Father - but on earth my members were suffering, my members on earth were in need. If you gave anything to my members, what you gave would reach their Head. Would that you had known that my little ones were in need when I placed them on earth for you and appointed them your stewards to bring your good works into my treasury. But you have placed nothing in their hands; therefore you have found nothing in my presence.”

CCC 1040 The Last Judgment will come when Christ returns in glory. Only the Father knows the day and the hour; only he determines the moment of its coming. Then through his Son Jesus Christ he will pronounce the final word on all history. We shall know the ultimate meaning of the whole work of creation and of the entire economy of salvation and understand the marvelous ways by which his Providence led everything towards its final end. The Last Judgment will reveal that God’s justice triumphs over all the injustices committed by his creatures and that God’s love is stronger than death.

CCC 1041 The message of the Last Judgment calls men to conversion while God is still giving them “the acceptable time, . . . the day of salvation.” It inspires a holy fear of God and commits them to the justice of the Kingdom of God. It proclaims the “blessed hope” of the Lord’s return, when he will come “to be glorified in his saints, and to be marveled at in all who have believed.”

Yes.

At the General Resurrection, the souls shall be united to their resurrected bodies. The bodies will have a different character than what our bodies now have. So yes, they ARE new bodies; transformed bodies, glorified bodies.

“He will transform the body of our humiliation so that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all things subject to himself.” (Philippians 3:21)
He said in the Gospels that he was going to institute the kingdom of God right here on Earth the first time that he was here. What happened to him then? Did his plans get screwed up?
He surely instituted the kingdom! The kingdom of God is the reign of righteousness, peace and joy. Before the coming of Christ, mankind was lost in unrighteousness. But after the coming of Christ, forgiveness of sins is obtained and therefore, people can live in the righteousness of God.

“For the kingdom of God is not food and drink but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17)

“Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.” (Luke 17:21)

The kingdom of God is within us. We are the kingdom. We are the reign of righteousness, peace and joy. The church (we, the people of Christ) is the kingdom of God.
If he does come back again, will he raise the dead and then people will start popping out of graves like something from a George Romero movie? Then peace and understanding will suddenly take over?
It is true that he will raise the dead. Whether this will happen by people popping out of their graves, I doubt it. Peace and understanding will surely take over, because the wicked shall be driven out into hell and the righteous shall be purified and made perfect.
It doesn’t seem very plausible to me. If everyone starts coming back to life and they dont die any more, the Earth will soon be too full of people to be inhabitable.
The earth is actually too huge for all of humanity to make it inhabitable. In fact, the current population of the world, 7 billion, can fit in the state of Texas with each person having more than 1000 sq. feet for himself.
If you think of all of this in magical terms, it all makes sense. But, once you start thinking of it all in practical ways…it make NO sense whatsoever. e or something lame like that.
Does it make sense now?

Nope.
I still don’t get it!
It all sounds like a bizarre fairy tale for “grownups”.
Some texts were written by a semi-literate people for a mostly illiterate audience hundreds of years ago, which tried to explain a strange world to a perplexed population.
Jesus was a prophet, but, there is scant evidence that he is THE Messiah spoken of in the Old Testament. He was here, he did some interesting things, but, I don’t believe that he is coming back again in any kind of earthly, physical form. Even if he did…so what? Do you really believe that he is going to transform the world in any significant way?
The world is what it is and will remain so for at least another 2,000 years.
A person must jump threw all sorts of mental hoops to really nail down any of this wooly-headed thinking.
It just doesn’t work on any level that makes any sense at all.
But, I know that people will just tell me thats the whole mystical mystery of the whole thing…right?

Then your reason is correct. Go with your reason not with tradition. Scripture only mentions two places: heaven and hell. Man’s traditions come along and confuses people by adding or removing from this.

Nope.

It sounds like you are simply here to try to bait Catholics and obviously are not interested in genuine discussion on the Catholic faith. You comments vary from flippant to downright rude.

I think if you have actual questions, we would be glad to answer them. I’ll be praying for you.

Ya, that’s right. It amuses me when people who claim to go by reason make such unreasonable statements like he did here. Genuine willingness to understand the other side is one of the first marks of a person who is guided by reason. But alas, some people give the excuse of following reason for their unreasonable behavior, as Shakespeare put it - " ‘The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool.’".

Thanks folks.
I’m not really trying to rile up your hackles, but, I’m just saying that it IS pretty bizarre stuff. If someone made a movie about this, nobody would go and see it because it’s just too weird! It’s very odd to me that just because someone wrote this down many centuries ago, people will just automatically believe it.
I mean, think about it.
People have been dead and buried for centuries will suddenly spring to life with new bodies and they will live happily ever after. It sounds nice, but, really now…
How do we REALLY know if Jesus rose on the third day? Because of a sentence or two in the Gospels? Even if he did rise, so what? He is not here any longer to do anything substantial. Do you really believe that he is coming back again? Based on what evidence?
If you read the Gospels CAREFULLY, Jesus had EVERY expectation of establishing God’s kingdom HERE on Earth in HIS lifetime. He says that OVERTLY.
I’m paraphrasing, but, he said something like There are some here today who will not taste death till these things come to pass. He was refering to himself whenever he referenced The Son of Man coming in his glory. But, we all know how the story ended.
Maybe, he is somewhere doing some important work, but, is he really going to come back again and get rid of all of the evil and the world will be a fine and dandy place from then on?
I just find it VERY difficult to buy into all of that.
You guys can get angry with me for disagreeing with you, but, it just strikes me as being nigh to impossible that this will all happen.
Jesus was here, he did some good things, he was killed , and now, he is not with us any longer. If he does come back again, what makes you think it won’t be the same old thing all over again?
I’m just saying…

It seems to me people have been making movies about it for many, many years now and people have been flocking to see them. There must indeed be something there then by your own reasoning.
