I’m trying to learn how to use this site. I hope I’m doing this correctly.
I have been informed by some people that there is generational curses. I have even been tolled that I must have one. I need to know if there is such a thing that is put on families?

If you truly have reason to believe you are under the effects of a curse, you should talk to a priest immediately.

There are some books I know that talk about these sorts of things, but I would really recommend talking to a priest first before reading up on it. No need to scare yourself silly if it turns out to be nothing.

And never forget, the power of Our Lord is FAR stronger than any power of evil. If we make every effort to stay close to Our Lord and trust Him, we do not have to fear. One stays close to the Lord by thinking about Him, learning about Him, obeying Him. Don’t waste precious mental time thinking and learning about possible evils.

What makes you think you have a curse on your family?
Who told you that, and what are the manifestations?

As others have said here, pray to God, and he will keep you safe.

There’s no such thing as a generational curse, as we tend to think of curses. Maybe somebody who thinks they’ve got magic or authority might try it, but it wouldn’t really exist.

When the Bible speaks of blessings and curses, a “blessing” (brk) is having God’s favor on you, and a “curse” ('arr) is having that favor removed. Without God’s favor, a person is totally exposed to natural consequences of sinful actions, and all sorts of natural annoyances. When the earth was “cursed” after the Fall of Man, it just turned into normal dirt you had to work with, as opposed to being super-fruitful and accommodating as in Eden.

The other Hebrew word translated as “curse” is “qll”, which means God is taking action in a punishing way.

There are some sins which are bad and for which nobody makes reparation, and so their temporal effects stick around for a long time and hurt a lot of people. Sometimes this happens in a community or family; but of course, most of the bad temporal effects of sin are on people we’ll never hear about, in ways that we’ll never know about. Sin, like gossip, can really travel.

But it seems counterproductive to assume that any kind of series of bad happenings is the result of a “curse”, much less a multi-generational one, or a sin of your fathers visiting itself upon you. Jesus was pretty clear, with the blind man and others, that plenty of bad stuff can happen that’s totally unrelated to sin or curses. In fact, some of it is allowed to occur in order to test people’s mettle, or strengthen them and bring them blessings, or to give glory to God in the way they patiently bear with suffering or misfortune. Whatever happens, we are there to serve the Lord, not to fear curses. (Or to blame curses for our troubles or mistakes!)

Seek blessings. Do not trouble yourself about curses. If you are worried, go talk to a priest or someone who gives wise counsel. Don’t let people frighten you about this kind of thing.

Maybe ‘generational curse’ here means more like the effect of our fallen nature except that it can disappear after a period of time. Our fallen nature is always with us what often times leads us to sin. It is part of us and which we struggle against all the time, as St. Paul said, “I did the thing I did not want to do and did not do the thing I wanted to do, and therefore what a wretched person I am”.

Generational curse is this characteristic that we inherit from our parents and very often that leads us to sin too and which we struggle against most of the time.

A common example – parents who committed adultery. It is a sin and according to scripture this sin will perpetuate until the fourth generation, that is, their children and their children’ children will commit adultery too. It is a perversion in that family because the parents committed it. The cycle need to be broken by not committing adultery – by going to God for strength and grace to overcome the temptation.

Another example – sin of children against parents, like dishonoring them. This also can run down to many generations.

The reasons why this kind of sin / behavior can be passed down to the next generation is because of certain propensity to do it more than any other people – and that’s why it’s call a curse.

We can take it as any ordinary weakness if we do not believe in generational curse because ultimately it’s whether we can overcome it or not. Of course in a serious case where help is often needed, the person concerned need to be aware why he is more inclined to commit this sin than any other. Praying to God to bless him so that he can overcome the weakness is a good approach to it.

God bless.

Here’s a response to this kind of question from Fr. Vincent Serpa here at CA. Could this be a generational curse?

How about the Kennedy family though? It seems that there was a curse on the generation that Jack and Robert and the other children were in.

There is no such thing as a generational curse! End of story.

what makes you an authority on this?
Show me where the Church teaches there is such a thing as a generational curse. It doesn’t because there is no such thing. It is superstition which is a grave sin against the first commandment.
Pay attention to the post of Church Militant who kindly gave us Father Serpa’s reply on this subject or do you also doubt a priest.

I can’t remember where I read it… but there was one of the early Christian saints who pointed out that if God really was unhappy with you, He would give you lots and lots of success and long life – which would mean lots of time to repent, or lots of rope to hang yourself with. They would have all their happiness on earth, and then an eternity of suffering.

Specially blessed people, meanwhile, would share in Christ’s suffering all their lifetime on earth, and have an eternity of happiness in their eternal life.

(Was that in St. Clement of Alexandria, maybe? The book about the Rich Man?)

So if there are really generational curses, the people suffering from them would be rich, long-lived, successful, and apparently happy as clams until they died at the age of 101, surrounded by friends and relations, and went straight to Hell.

Meanwhile, generational blessings would manifest in poverty, disease, martyrdom, and all sorts of good things, until folks died and went straight to Heaven.

(And now that you mention it, there were an awful lot of families of saints where the people did die young or suffer horribly a lot. Like St. Therese’s family, or St. Basil the Great’s.)

This has been your happy Christian thought for the day. 😉

In Scripture, though, we see things like Noah cursing Canaan (which didn’t seem to work out to well for the future of the Canannites), or we have those at the Crucifixion telling Pilate that Jesus’s blood should be on them and their children.

I don’t know if these sorts of things would be considered a “generational curse” or not, but it’s something to consider.

I would believe that from scripture it is totally possible to have generational curses
in your family. Take for instance when Christ said of those who said that they were Christians but don’t really know him:

Matthew 7:21-23
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ 23Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!”

Now if this is the case, then there are many who now say they know Jesus but do not and are doing evil. If evil is being done then that has to incur some kind of warming signs or wrath.

Numbers 14:18
“The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.”

Exodus 20:5-6
“You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6but showing love to a thousand [generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments.”

I believe that God is full of grace but at points in a person refuses to come to God and do his will, scripture clearly details some form of punishment for correcting. But grace abounds much before this happens.

I think you are correct. God can be merciful or punishing. We need to both fear and love God. God is judgemental.

Luckily there are a lot of intercessionary saints and of course Mary to help our cause.

Exodus 20:5-6
“You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for** I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me**, but showing love to a thousand [generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments.”

The Jews seemed to believe this when they asked Jesus whether it is the sin of his (the blind man) parents that he was blind. Of course we know what Jesus’ answer was, but nevertheless there is some truth in that otherwise the Jews would not have believed it.

As in all sins, repentance is called for to receive God’s forgiveness. Saying prayers for the forgiveness of our parents sins is quite common and quite Catholic. The cycle of the curse needs to be broken for us to be set free of its consequence - through prayers, confession and repentance.

who told you this? was it a priest who knows you and your family and who is aware of spiritual and other difficulties you labor under? no? then it is garbage.
it is someone who claims to have inflicted such a curse? that person is in grave danger for breaking the first commandment, and needs the help of a priest himself.

The Old Testament is clear that there are such things as “generational curses,” for example, the statement that appears in Exodus 34: 5-7 (NAB) ”The Lord, the Lord, a God gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in love and fidelity, continuing his love for a thousand generations, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin; yet not declaring the guilty guiltless, but bringing punishment for their parent’s wickedness on children and children’s children to the third and fourth generations!” [a/k/a “The sins of the father”]

To that end, there is a practice called healing the family tree. It may even have been practiced in the ancient Church.

The idea is to remedy those “third and fourth generation” punishments/curses.
