Does anyone know if “Healing of the Family Tree Mass or erational Healing Mass” is sanctioned by the Church. I have been to these Masses done by Priests I trust and yet recently it came to my attention that they are a new phenomena and not Catholic tradition.Isn’t it just a Mass for the Dead? I just simply want to know if The Pope gives permission for this but I can’t navigate the Vatican website. Please don’t give me your opinion I really would just like the Truth. Thank you.

I am not familiar with the term and would need more info.
there is no such Mass in the missal if that is your question. there is a Mass for Reconcilation with a special Eucharistic prayer.

I have been to several retreats where the virtue of the Eucharist in healing families has been discussed, but of course that grace is available in every Mass.
this discussion probably belongs on the liturgy and sacraments forum

thanks puzzleannie-I will post it on the forum you suggested

I met Dr. Kenneth McCall in 1984. He is the one who popularized the celebration of Masses to heal family members by offering masses for deceased relatives. He was an English psychiatrist who had been an Anglican missionary to China; he wrote a book entitled, “Healing the Family Tree.” He met Pope John Paul II at one point but I do not know if the Pope endorsed his work without reservations.

At a Catholic healing mass that Dr. McCall was present, I placed the name of my father on the altar along with other deceased relatives. My father had committed suicide in 1968. I decided to offer the Mass for my father and relatives in case any were in purgatory. I had total confidence that Jesus could heal my family members in purgatory and release them if it was His will. At the words, “the Mass is ended go in peace” I had a powerful mystical experience. I felt Jesus touch my shoulder and I felt His peace beyond all understanding come over me. At that same moment, I felt my father and numerous deceased relatives enter heaven.

Since then, I have read objections to Dr. McCall’s work from the John Paul Institute. I read them and understand their points but I wonder if they realize that the healing Masses are meant to pray for poor souls in purgatory to release them.

I am grateful for the healing Mass and as a result I recognize that purgatory does exist and that Masses for the dead are powerful and truly do help our deceased loved ones in purgatory.

It depends what this Mass consists of. First, if there is no Eucharist, it shouldn’t be called a Mass. I have heard of these services where people pray over each other, speak in tongues, and are “slain in the Spirit.” I think these things are completely ridiculous, and need to be stopped.

It has been condemned by several dioceses world wide. It differs substantially from normal healing Mass in one very specific area. Its adherants claim that YOUR problems today, monetary, inability to hold a job, bad relationships etc., are caused by the accumulated sins of your forefathers, a generational curse as it were. What these “masses” purport to do is to assist in removing that collective guilt from YOU so that your life can improve.

As you may have noticed, there is nothing the slightest bit Catholic or even Christian about this concept.

A lot of people feel that the generational healing mass is only to pray for the suffering souls in Purgatory. It is not.

Fr john Hampsh is very knowledgeable on healing of the family tree and healing masses that are part of it. I saw him in toronto years ago and is a very holy priest. Here is his website and book:

From the website:
for the healing of any possible bondages afflicting the body, mind or spirit of any family members, living or dead (and also for the prevention of disorders in future family members who do not yet even exist),

Pretty cool, you can save your descendents who aren’t even here yet from the curse!!!👍 👍

To prepare for such a Mass, you can begin to fill out THE GENOGRAM FORM. Write in the names of relatives you know. Place a cross in the boxes of those you don’t. Identify the “curses” or negative traits in your family.

Just in case someone thought I made up the curses angle. In all my years I have never heard of a Genogram:confused:

**Find out more about this exciting Scripture-based approach to healing that has been recently “rediscovered” to deal with “generational bondage”
**

I’d actually like to see somewhere in the Catechism or in any Official Catholic Document where the term
Generational Bondage even exists.

Not surprising that they have a line of products for these things.

At least not to me. But then again I’m cynical, mean spirited un charitable and overall not a real nice guy.

Oh well, I guess thats all the fault of my great great great grandfather 👍 👍 👍 👍

Sometimes, when we are so blocked, we are not open to the healing that has been experienced by many who have encountered fr Hampsh. To be so judgmental wiothout even knowing or reading of any of the material is beyond my comprehension…

And there are many things that are not in the Catechism…like Eucharistic miracles? charismatic healings? Does that mean it does not exist?

I have read quite a bit on the subject** and **I have read the condemnations and the official denouncements of these activities by different dioceses. Comparing Eucharistic miracles which incidentally are part of the Catholic faith and charismatic healings which have happened in the faith for generations , with this sort of stuff is what is beyond comprehension to me.

But hey, maybe I’m under a generational curse myself. maybe thats why i am the way I am. You see it’s not my fault, it’s someone elses.

Thats what it is really all about, putting the blame for your misfortune on someone else, preferably someone who cannot defend themselves. Like long dead relatives that you may not even know.

That and selling DVDs CDs, Videos and Books:thumbsup: 👍

Please provide me links on the warnings given…it would be interesting. ‘The sin of the father’ is very scriptural.

What’s wrong with the the CDs and DVDs? Would you put under the same judgment those priests like Frs Corapi and Groeschel who do the very same thing?

We can see the effect of generational patterns of thinking and acting. This is what genograms reveal, the patterns of suicide, the patterns of abandonment, the patterns of abuse, addiction that extend through multiple generations. Child abuse is often generational. Most men who sexually abused children were abused as children.

The negative shaming messages given children by their wounded parents can haunt their children all their lives. For example, children can be told by their parents that they are 'stupid, lazy, crazy and useless." Such pronouncements are very much like curses as they can deeply impact a person and can be transferred across the generations, repeated in one form or another, to multiple generations. I have seen this within my own family of origin.

One story about curses: I encountered one family who had a curse placed upon them by a witch. The mother had sought the help of a witch in Mexico. The witch cast a spell to help heal a family member and then demanded more money; the woman did not have more and so the witch in a rage put a curse upon her and her family. She called upon the devil to send a lost soul from hell to haunt the woman and her family forever.

The woman became deathly ill and later diagnosed with terminal cancer of the uterus. I first met the woman and her story when I came to visit the son and his mother as a member of a hospice team, it was close to sunset and I heard this cry that sounded like a human and a bird at the same time. I remarked about it to the hospice nurse as I knew the birds of the area. I had never heard of any bird like that before. Later, the nurse went into the one room house and the son came out and related the story of the curse. He said that the demon manifested itself every sunset with this birdlike call that sounded human. I told him I heard that call. At that moment an invisible cloud descended upon me and the man. It felt like a million million mosquitoes buzzing and whispering all at once. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up. I felt this tremendous fear. I could not think. I felt total confusion. I could not even remember the Lord’s Prayer. Finally, I began to repeat the name of Jesus over and over and the spirit of confusion left.

Jesus warned us not to curse each other. Why would he tell us not to curse if curses have no spiritual effect? Jesus showed that curses do have power when he cursed the fig tree and the fig tree wilted and died.

We see how blessings are passed on by the patriarchs to subsequent generations. The story of Jacob and Esau demonstrates how important receiving the blessing of the Patriarch. It was not just a blessing as the firstborn to receive the temporal goods of the patriarch but a spiritual blessing, too.

Jesus took the curse of our sins, the wrath of sin upon his own body. He died in three hours which was unusual as the Gospel relates the guards expected to need to break his legs. This suggests that perhaps He died so quickly because He endured the curse of sin upon Himself. That curse of sin is real.

What healing Masses do among other things is ask God to remove any intergenerational curses. It is not the only thing that healing Masses do.

This practive of healing Masses is not a denial of Jesus redemptive power on the cross that we receive in baptism.

Remember Jesus washed the feet of his disciples in John’s recounting of the last supper and told his disciples to do the same as an example of loving each other as He loved them.

We wash ‘our feet’ in baptism but we also do this in other sacraments including the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Holy Mass. As sinners, we need to go for cleansing as we fall into sin individually and collectively.

As Catholics, we believe that through the power of Jesus’ redemptive act on the cross, we can extend into the present His healing power to break the power of sin and death. His death on the cross occurred 2000 years ago, but its redemptive benefits are carried forth into our present. God is not in time. For Him, there is no past or future, there is only one moment, NOW. Those who do healing Masses believe that Jesus does this with intergenerational curses and that the benefit of Christ’s death can extend both in the past, present and the future.

As an example of this benefit that transcends time, Mary our Blessed Mother received the benefit of Christ’s death on the cross before the fact at the moment of her conception; she was born without original sin.

actually a genogram is a tool used by some psychotherapists to uncover familial patterns of behavior such as suicide, depression, alcoholism or other problems that do seem to run in families, but it is just a diagnostic tool, I never heard it used in this sense.

it appears different posters have encountered different types of “events” labelled as healing Masses, which are not all the same or all promoted by the same group, so I guess we just compare notes and look for authority comments where they exist.

Thank you for sharing this. I am from a family where there is a pocket of us who suffer from Crohn’s Disease. It was found that down the generations at some point, someone tried to abort by drinking something. Of course, in those days that is exactly how they thought they could bring labor/abortion on. It throughly makes sense. I was healed of it in Israel 2000…my son almost died of it but has been well the last 10 years.

I have had masses for generational healing said. i think I might have another round said.

Dear Shoshana,

I thank God for your healing!

What a beautiful icon and message accompanying your post!

Here is a link to one

One of the stories is on the sixth page under international news. There are others. This one was published in November of last year.

As far as the same judgement, yes, if the people you mentioned do it for the same reason as I suspect these generational healers do. Of course, why not? If they are just out to make a buck of course I’ll judge them.

The thing is Father Corapi, who I know nothing about by the way, apparently does not promote recently discovered miraculous ways to remove curses from your family tree.

Stoning homosexuals is also very scriptural as I’m sure you are aware. And since both passages come from the Pentateuch, Exodus and Leviticus, , I’m sure you would support that activity as well. If not why not?

It’s very scriptural.

I found this site while doing a Google search…

I see that there has been some discussion around Healing of the Family Tree. I have had a number of spiritual problems here at home. I sought help from the Catholic Priest early in March of this year because I was witness to some oddities in my home. I had my home blessed and the problem got worse. The priest came back and did a home exorcism.

The problem has still not resolved. I was offered a couple of months ago a Generational Healing Mass. Although I want the problem to be gone I am still really unsure if this is the right step or not.

I really need some help.

A Family Tree Healing Mass takes place in Kilcornan Brothers of Charity Church in Clarenbridge Galway Ireland every Thursday at 3pm. The Priest is Fr Kane who is in his early 90s. He is regarded as a very Holy man. The Mass is the same as normal except for a long prayer read by the Priest at the start. The Priest also invites those present to pray for any area or place where there seems to something “not right”. For example an area where there is a high suicide rate, accident black spot etc. I have attended the Mass here 5 or 6 times, and sometimes during the prayer mentioned above the Priest appears to be under attack, with his body shaking and arms flying up and down. Those present begin to pray the prayer to St Michael when this happens. Before the Mass the Divine Mercy Chaplet is recited and Afterwards the Blessed Sacrament is Exposed. The Priest blesses each person present individually with the Blessed Sacrament. He also lays hands and prays over anyone who is seeking healing. I assume the Bishop of Galway has given his Blessing to this as the Family Tree Mass is also celebrated frequently in several Churches throughout the Diocese.
