Genesis 1 and 2

I am wondering how most people understand these two chapters.

Following St.Augustine and saints like him, those two chapters are not literal.

They do have a literal understanding, that is the purpose of his book Literal Interpretation of Genesis.

All scripture has a literal sense - that is, the direct message that the author intended. It is only after the literal sense is understood the one can begin to grasp the spiritual senses. Refer to the Catechism of the Catholic Church articles 111-118.
