**Who is the "WOMAN’ referred to in Genesis 3:15…

Is it the Blessed Mother or the Church?

Your view on this will be very much appreciated…tnx…**

I’ve always thought it meant Mary. After all, she gave birth to Christ Jesus, who broke the chains of sins that hold us captive. He destroyed satans power, and this came from Mary’s willingness to do God’s will.

Indeed it is our Blessed Virgin Mary. This passage, the protoevangelium (first good news) is one of the foundation stone passages for demonstrating Our Lady’s sinlessness - if God put enmity between the serpent and the woman, then he placed her in opposition to Satan - sin of any kind would make her in alliance with Satan, no matter how briefly. It also highlights that it was God who made her sinless, not through any power she had as something above a humble and obedient creation.

In the immediate context, of course, it is Eve since that is who God is directly reffering to. However, Eve’s direct seed (Cain, Abel, Seth or her other direct offspring) did not fulfill the prophesy. Only Jesus did that. And of course he was the seed of the Woman as described in John 4, John 21 and Revelation 12 who is clearly the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Dr Mark Miravalle - MaryCast #6: The Protogospel

After the fall of our first parents, Adam and Eve. God intervenes, pre-announcing a “Woman” who with her “Seed” will fight against the serpent, crushing his head. In this episode Dr Mark Miravalle clearly shows that the “Woman” and her “Seed” is none other than Mary and Her Son, Jesus.

Since our Blessed Mother is the ultimate model of the Church it refers to both. Many Catholic scholars subscribe to this line of thinking as I do since Mary is Jesus’ first and best disciple rendering her as the Church in its completeness from its very beginning…teachccd 🙂

Great!!!

We all have the same view on this…

Some biblical writers/scholars, however, believe that it can be the Church

The question might arise did the church give birth to Christ or did Christ give birth to the church ? Mary gave birth to Jesus and Jesus to the church ?

Does the moon give off its own light ? The light from the moon is a reflection from the sun, just as Mary is not the light, but a reflection of her Son.

It might arise, and the answer would be “both and” just like with so much other catholic doctrine.

Jesus founded the Church, and the Church’s mission is to spread the Gospel. This mission can be said to bring Jesus to the world, in effect giving birth to him every day.

Maybe I shouldn't of put that in question form because it seemed to have been taken the wrong way. Sorry if I threw you off a tad.Didn't want to portray myself as being a doubter. The things I said I put out there for doubters to ponder about why we take Rev 12 as talking about Mary.

You got 3 persons, the Child,(Jesus ) the dragon, (Satan) & Michael (the archangel) how can we dismiss the 4th, the woman
( Mary ) as not being a person too. It just doesn’t make sense.

May God Bless, Static ( 1 Tim 1:15 )

Christians have recognized (all the way back to the first century) that the woman and her seed mentioned in Genesis 3:15 do not simply stand for Eve and one of her righteous sons (either Abel or Seth). They prophetically foreshadow Mary and Jesus. Thus, just as the first half of the verse, speaking of the enmity between the serpent and the woman, has been applied to Mary, the second half, speaking of the head crushing and heel striking, has also been applied to Mary due to the manuscript variant, though it properly applies to Jesus, given the original Hebrew.

This does not mean that the idea cannot be validly applied to Mary as well. Through her cooperation in the incarnation of Christ, so that the Son of God (who, from the cross, directly crushed the head of the serpent) became her seed, Mary did crush the head of the serpent. In the same way, the serpent struck at Christ on the cross, and indirectly struck at Mary’s heart as well, who had to witness the death of her own Son (cf. John 19:25-27). As the holy priest Simeon had told her years before: “Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against – and a sword will pierce through your own soul also – that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed” (Luke 2:34b-35).
Thus Jesus crushed the serpent directly and was directly struck by the serpent; Mary, through her cooperation in the incarnation and her witnessing the sufferings and death of her Son, indirectly crushed the serpent and was indirectly struck by the serpent.

There is only one other verse in scripture where a woman (Mary/Church) and a serpent appear in the same verse. Rev. 12:17.

The Pope discusses this in his homily on the Assumption: zenit.org/article-20333?l=english

What about St. Jerome’s commentary on Latin Vulgate re: Genesis 3:15

i hope someone can post it here…

Christian Community Bible with its imprimatur in its footnote says that Gen. 3:15 refers to Christ as the Protagonist…

Latin Vulgate
Genesis 3
15
inimicitias ponam inter te et mulierem et semen tuum et semen illius ipsa conteret caput tuum et tu insidiaberis calcaneo eius

Douay-Rheims Bible
Genesis 3
**15 **I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel.

15 “She shall crush”… Ipsa, the woman; so divers of the fathers read this place, conformably to the Latin: others read it ipsum, viz., the seed. The sense is the same: for it is by her seed, Jesus Christ, that the woman crushes the serpent’s head.

tnx for info…

I just noticed this:
Rendsburg in Biblica concludes that one of the characteristics of the ancient Hebrew text of the Pentateuch was the same inscription for a third personal singular pronoun, irrespective of gender. This is known as an epicene personal pronoun.10 An epicene personal pronoun is one which has but one form to indicate either male or female sex. In other words, the same word
הוא
was used for both “he” and “she.”1 This explains why both translations, one referring to a woman, the other to a man, are correct.
**Having read this, we can surmise that it’s either Jesus Christ or the Blessed Mother who will specifically “Crush” the serpent’s head…

This is also of importance:
St. Jerome [347-420] translated the Hebrew texts while living an ascetic life in Bethlehem and completed his work in 405. St. Jerome’s Latin Vulgate Bible was the standard Bible in Western civilization for over 1000 years! He employed the word she for the epicene form in Genesis 3:15. This of course had a profound effect on Marian devotion. St. Jerome captured the meaning at the time through an expression: “Death through Eve, life through Mary.” One still sees today statues of Mary trampling the head of the serpent. 24

Jesus Christ said at the Foot of the Cross that “It is already finished.”

Does it tells us that Jesus has nothing to do anymore with Genesis 3:15

This is after writing the stuff over in Traditional Catholic Forum ( honestly don’t know everything, very humbling ),
Roman Catholic Church is Christ’s Bride, would that make Her to be our Earthly Queen and Mother, sort of like Our Lady being our Heavenly Mother and Queen???

Christ did love the Church (we are the Church) but that doesn’t make the Church our Earthly Queen…

The Blessed Mother is…She is the Queen of Heaven and Earth…

By the way, what’s your comment on our topic regarding Genesis 3:15
