*1And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

2That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

3And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

4There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. *

I am assuming that (1) by men and daughters it means humans, children of Adam and Eve started to multiply? (2) by sons of God does this mean the spirits or angel especially those that rebel against God such as those followers of Lucifer? The union of these angels and humans resulted in the evolution of giants, mighty men example Samson, wise men, and evil men?

Not all angels who cohabited with the daughters of men were evil that is why there were men of good and evil and when God decided to put a stop to all of these He took away the abilities of all angels to be able to have physical relationship or contact with humans the good angels repented and went back to God while those who refuse to repent continue to corrupt this earth. Does this makes sense, what is the official explanation of the Catholic church on this scripture?

Sons of God were the children of Adam. The daughters of men were the Lamechites. (Descendents of Cain).

The sons of God are the ones who worship God and keep his ways. The Lamechites are described as being just the opposite. So when they intermixed, they started taking on the pagan practices of the Lamechites.

So Son of God = descendents of Seth, daughters of men = female descendents of Cain

Angels and humans did NOT interbreed. That is nonsense and I don’t understand why people think these things.

D-R Bible, haydock Commentary:

Ver. 1. Daughters. These had borne equal proportion with the males from the beginning; but here they are particularized, because they were the chief instruments in corrupting the descendants of Seth. (Haydock) — Even the sons of these libidinous people were so effeminate, as to deserve to be called women. (Menochius)

Ver. 2. The sons of God. The descendants of Seth and Enos are here called Sons of God, from their religion and piety: whereas the ungodly race of Cain, who by their carnal affections lay grovelling upon the earth, are called the children of men. The unhappy consequence of the former marrying with the latter, ought to be a warning to Christians to be very circumspect in their marriages; and not to suffer themselves to be determined in choice by their carnal passion, to the prejudice of virtue or religion. (Challoner) — See St. Chrysostom, hom. 22, &c. Some copies of the Septuagint having the angels of God, induced some of the ancients to suppose, that these spiritual beings (to whom, by another mistake, they attributed a sort of aerial bodies) had commerce with women, as the pagans derived their heroes from a mortal and a god. But this notion, which is borrowed from the book of Henoch, is quite exploded. (Calmet) — The distinction of the true Church from the synagogue of satan, here established, has been ever since retained, as heretics are still distinguished from Catholics. (Worthington) (St. Augustine)

Ver. 3. His days shall be, &c. The meaning is, that man’s days, which before the flood were usually 900 years, should now be reduced to 120 years. Or rather, that God would allow men this term of 120 years, for their repentance and conversion, before he would send the deluge. (Challoner) — He spoke therefore to Noe in his 480th year. (St. Augustine) Those who suppose, that he foretold this event 20 years later, think with St. Jerome, that God retrenched 20 years from the time first assigned for penance. The Spirit of the sovereign Judge was fired with contending; or, as others translate it, with remaining quiet as in a scabbard, and bearing with the repeated crimes of men. He resolved to punish them severely in this world, that he might shew mercy to some of them hereafter. (St. Jerome, 9. Heb.) (Calmet) — If we suppose, that God here threatens to reduce the space of man’s life to 120 years, we must say, at least, that he did it by degrees: for many lived several hundred years, even after the deluge. In the days of Moses, indeed, few exceeded that term. But we think the other interpretation is more literal, and that God bore with mankind the full time which he promised. (Worthington)

Ver. 4. Giants. It is likely the generality of men before the flood were of a gigantic stature, in comparison with what men now are. But these here spoken of, are called giants, as being not only tall in stature, but violent and savage in their dispositions, and mere monsters of cruelty and lust. (Challoner) — Yet we need not imagine, that they were such as the poets describe, tearing up mountains, and hurling them against heaven. Being offspring of men, who had lived hitherto with great temperance, but now gave full scope to their passions, and the love of the fair daughters whom they chose, we need not wonder that they should be amazingly strong and violent. Nephilim, rushing on, as Ag.[Aquila?] translates. That there have been giants of an unusual size, all historians testify. Og, Goliah, &c. are mentioned in Scripture, and the sons of Enac are represented as much above the common size, as the Hebrews were greater than grasshoppers, Numbers xiii. 34. If we should suppose they were four or five times our size, would that be more wonderful than that they should live nine or ten times as long as we do? See St. Augustine, City of God xv. 9, 23; Calmet’s Dissert. &c. Delrio affirms, that in 1572 he saw at Rouen, a native of Piedmont, above nine feet high. (Haydock) — Of old. The corruption of morals had commenced many ages ago, and some of the sons of Seth had given way to their lusts; so that we are not to suppose, that these giants were all born within a hundred years of the flood, as some might suppose from their being mentioned here, after specifying the age of Noe, chap. v. 31. (Haydock)

Is that the official interpretation of the CC? It is interpreted just like how I just mention it because of the way the text is written it seem to be very straight forward especially if we compare it to actual situation wherein there existed giants (Goliath), mighty men (Samson,), wise men (great prophets, philosophers, scientist, astrologist, great kings), evil men (dictators, tyrants, killers, psychopath, conquerors etc.)

If not because of the time difference it could also mean the dinosaurs, cave men and other pre historic creatures. The disappearance of those pre historic creatures could be related to God’s punishment for all these corruptions?

Genesis 6 : 11 - 12 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.

Noah probably took with him only creatures that were not corrupted just like he took only his family? Still, because of the time difference it is difficult to relate this to the pre historic era the sudden disappearance of those dinosaurs.

Looking at the very text itself and the interpretation that you have just provided, I understand that both Seth and Cain are children of Adam and Eve the only difference is that Seth was the holy one that worship the One God while Cain follow his own pagan practice especially after he was reprimanded by God for murdering Abel.

Genesis chapter 4 the curse to Cain and his descendants.
Genesis 5 the family tree and lineage of Adam and Eve.
Genesis 6 The growth of human population and eventually the cause of the corruption of the world.

*Genesis 6:
  1. And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
  2. That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
  3. There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.*
Looking at chapter 6:1; “when men begun to multiply and daughters were born unto them” this would seem to be referring to all the descendants of Adam and Eve that include the lineage of Seth and Cain that their children began to multiply as seen in Genesis 5.

Then, on Genesis 6:2,* Daughters of men* it did not say the daughters were of Cain, family line or Seth’s at the same time to say that the daughters refers to the children of Cain does this mean that Seth families did not have any or many daughters fair or not? “sons of God saw the daughters of men were fair and they took unto the daughters of men and they bare children to them”. If the interpretation is that the “sons of God” refers the the children of Seth this would mean that Seth’s children’s did not have fair looking daughters and that they were attracted to the women of Cain, it was not the daughters of Cain who came after them but it is the men of Seth’s that came after the daughters of Cain. Not withstanding that both Seth and Cain are children of Adam and Eve and are men thus the sons and daughters of men should mean children of Adam and Eve. It would seem the text is separating the two “sons” of God the first ones are the angels and the second one are the humans or men “That the sons of God (angels) saw the daughters of men (Adam and Eve children that multiply)”.

I am having difficulty in accepting that Genesis 6: 1 – 4 refers to Seth children and Cain children intermarrying each other especially since it did not mention anything that Seth lineage should not have anything to do with Cain people, because even if they intermarry they shouldn’t be able to produce giants because both Seth and Cain are from the same ancestors unless one of them somehow got mutated?

Genesis 6 also pointed out that great men were also the product of the union of the sons of God and daughters of men, this would seem to explain why we have some individuals are more talented then most?

By giving birth, could mean that the spirit of those angels took earthly forms and impregnated men’s daughter?

The covenant with Adam was marriage. It was between a man and a woman, and when Seth was born it says ‘At that time men began to call upon the name of the Lord’. This is a strong liturgical statement, the phrase itself indicates covenant worship. This means that the descendants of Seth were part of the same covenant, and worshiped in that covenant.

The Cainites are described as men of renown. In Hebrew that means men of their name. We get a sense of men who are seeking to make a name of themselves, verse the Sethites who are seeking to praise God for HIS name. This shows a definitive difference in the Sethites and the Cainites.

Then we see another important phrase: "they married as they chose.’ This implies that the Sethites now were not marrying as the covenant suggested, but as they chose. This could very well imply polygamy, breaking the covenant of God and choosing to marry however they chose.

Now why do we think that Sethites were ‘Sons of God’? Because Adam was the son of God. God made him in his image, and Seth was Adam’s direct descendant, making him a son of God. Cain was no longer a son of God, but a child of the devil (see 1 John 3:12).

Is it official teaching? I’m not sure. I do know that several very prominant Catholic scholars do interpret it this way, and Augustine even mentions that God’s family was restored in Seth and his descendants.

Here is from the Aquinas Study Bible

6:2 By the sons of God are to be understood the sons of Seth, who were good; while by the daughters of men the Scripture designates those who sprang from the race of Cain (St. Augustine) Philo and Josephus, the book of Enoch, and several of the early fathers, including St. Justin Martyr, Tertullian, St. Clement of Alexandria, Lactantius and others believed that the sons of God refers to angels.

I guess there exist no firm interpretation, but with Jesus Christ having redeem our sins I am assuming this include those of the Cainites, right?

Well if the flood of Noah is true… there are no Cainites either way. Only Noah and his family lived through it. Only the descendants of Adam are alive today.

A Jewish Midrash [see http://www.aish.com/jl/b/eb/ca/48950551.html”]World’s First Murder] has Na’amah, the daughter of Lemech, marrying Noah.
Code:
While the three sons of Lemech I die in a flood, the child of Lemech II builds an ark. And yet, while the children of Lemech I perish in that flood, the legacy of Lemech I is not erased entirely. One of his children, according to the sages, survives. According to the Midrash, Na'amah -- the sister of Tuval-Kayin -- becomes the wife of Noah.
Code:
So a daughter of Lemech I survives by marrying the son of Lemech II. In that union, humanity comes full circle. The doomed line of Cain merges with a spark of life from Shet -- the man who, according to Eve, was a replacement for Abel. At long last, the legacies of Cain and "replacement Abel" have come together, as a father from one line and a mother from the other unite to create Noah.
Thus the lines of Seth and Cain are united.

This is the final installment of a 15 part series. If you go to the link, use the search function at the bottom of the page to find the preceding episodes. It is an interesting tale.

In Genesis in general how do we reconcile the dinosaur and caveman era?

These are the Nephilim. They are the “giants” or fallen angels that bred with human to form offspring that were part human part angel.

If that were true why do we see that the only punishment was completely on the humans part. It was not daughters of men that did the evil deed, but the Sons of God. “They saw that the daughters of men were beautiful” and did as THEY chose. As such the Sons of God were punished. The only way the story makes any sense whatsoever is that the daughters of men were already corrupt (as the Cainites/Lamechites were) and the Sons of God were corrupted in the process of lusting and joining them in their pagan worship.

Otherwise the angels would have been punished as well. We see no such thing. Only mankind was punished.

That is total nonsense!!
It’s in the apocryphal Book of Enoch: there’s several chapters in it in which several hundred angels, known as the Grigori or the Watcher angels, descend to earth, mingle with the humans, teach them several different skills, ranging from writing to medicine to astronomy, and then start to have sexual relations with their human students, resulting in the Nephillim, the “giants in the earth” of Genesis.

Book of Enoch is not part of Sacred Scripture.

Book of Enoch is not part of Sacred Scripture.
Not in the Catholic or Protestant Bible, but if I remember correctly, the Coptic Christians of Eithiopia still have it, and there’s references to it all over the Old Testament. There’s a bit in Joshua where the Anakim (another name for the Nephillim) are referred to.

This is one of the most interesting passages of the old testament. As it was explained to me this passage is sometimes used to support and explain the “immaculate conception”. I have to admit it is possible. This caused me to drop my objection to the whole concept of the immaculate conception which eventually led me to accept that Jesus is the son of God. I’m surprised no one has mentioned that here.

The only issue I have is that if we are to go by the context as written in the Bible the reader will missed the Seth-Cane or Enoch explanation because there is no mention of it instead the text is very clear:
1And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
Clearly men here means us or the children of Adam and Eve start to multiply.
2That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
No mention of Seth or Cane, it leaves to the reader to understood that the “sons” are the angels and “daughters” are that of men. It is also clear that they went after the daughters the females only not the males.
3And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
Because of this God decided to limit the life span of humans because angels are immortals God does not want men to live as immortals that they will or might inherit from those angels.
** 4There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.**
Again, it says “sons” of God came to “daughters” of men. Both Seth and Cane are sons of men even though Cane just like Adam they were admonish for their sins Adam for eating the fruit, Cane for killing Abel, Cane is still son of man that is of Adam and Cane’s children will be consider son and daughters of men same as Seth and all the succeeding children of Adam and Eve.

We know that after Cane and Abel, Adam and Eve have many more children after that this include Seth, thus “men began to multiply”.

The Seth-Cane and Enoch story or gospel are for me a story of its own that is separate from the Genesis 6:1 - 4.
