And after that men began to be multiplied upon the earth, and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God seeing the daughters of men, that they were fair, took to themselves wives of all which they chose. 3 And God said: My spirit shall not remain in man for ever, because he is flesh, and his days shall be a hundred and twenty years. 4 Now giants were upon the earth in those days. For after the sons of God went in to the daughters of men, and they brought forth children, these are the mighty men of old, men of renown. 5 And God seeing that the wickedness of men was great on the earth, and that all the thought of their heart was bent upon evil at all times, 6 it repented him that he had made man on the earth. And being touched inwardly with sorrow of heart, 7 he said: I will destroy man, whom I have created, from the face of the earth, from man even to beasts, from the creeping thing even to the fowls of the air, for it repents me that I have made them. 8 But Noe found grace before the Lord.
Besides the idea of angels having any genetic code to apparently have children with mortal women, why did God even allow such relations to occur in the first place? It doesn’t seem to be fallen angels; I feel they would of mentioned it if that was the case. Right now it just seems like God didn’t care what his angels did as long as they were still loyal to him-showing off that Tyranical God that seems so easy to depict in the Old Testament.

Flavius you are misinterpreting the scriptures in a way most protestants have done with that verse. Please check with Catholic and Eastern Orthodox sources and from the Church Fathers of both Churches you will receive a better and more correct interpretation. The Sons of God in these verses refer to the direct line of Seth who is the 3rd son of Adam and Eve and the one in whose line we receive Noah. The daughters of men refer to the line of Cain. What the scriptures are saying is the good were influenced by the wicked. The line of Seth got involved with the line of Cain and the wickedness of Cain’s line corrupted the goodness of Seth’s line. Get the picture! The only family not effected was the family of Noah who are directly from the decendants of the line of Seth. Remember the words of St.Paul when he wrote in 1 Cor.15:33 " Do not be deceived, bad company corrupts good character. " The bad company of the line of Cain corrupted the good character of the line of Seth. The line of Seth became as bad as the line of Cain with the exception of Noah and his family.

I would not be troubled about that passage since ‘sons of God’ means those from Seth whereas ‘sons of man’ were from the family of Cain. The interpretation of them being angels comes from school of Alexandria, especially from St. Didymus. I believe we are in better company if we follow the interpretation of St. Augustine, St. John Chrysostom, Theodoret of Cyrus, etc.

Thank you both for answering; the footnotes of my apparently Catholic Bible didn’t mention the linages of Adam’s children being the meaning of sons of God. I’m sorry for taking so long to reply; Google claimed the forum had malware and I thought someone had hacked the forum.

Thank you for that David, most interesting.
