Genesis 8:13-20, talks about after Noah saw that the face of the earth was dry, he opened up the ark. God then said to him to go out with his family and with all the animals on the ark and to “increase and multiply upon it” (on the earth). In the 20th verse Noah built an altar and “offered holocausts upon the altar”.

I think this can be a foreshadowing to when Jesus said to His disciples before he ascended into heaven to “baptize all nations” (Matthew 28). The ark in Genesis represents the Church given by Christ. This passage in Genesis 8 can be a foreshadowing to Pentecost in that the animals in the ark are the gifts of the Holy Spirit given by God (God created all things). God told them to increase and multiply as Christ told His disciples to “baptize all nations” (thus would be “increasing” the gifts of the Holy Spirit to all nations by having more people receive them) Though the “increase and mulitply” in Genesis 8 I think is referring to the people (Noah and his family), but since there were two of every animal (one male and one female), we could expect that the animals too, increased and multiplied. As the ark opened and brought forth life on the earth, on Pentecost the Church went forth and also brought life to the nations (St. Peter baptized 3000 people on Pentecost!). As Noah “offered holocausts upon the altar”, so too did the disciples (if they were all ordained in that sense) offer the sacrifice of the mass upon an altar.

You’re not wrong… Noah’s Ark is often portrayed in the Fathers as foreshadowing the Church as the boat that saves people from the wreck of the world. The dove foreshadowing the Holy Spirit’s presence is another popular bit.

Of course, the fun part was paralleling various kinds of people in the Church with various kinds of animals. 🙂
