“The genetic fallacy is committed when an idea is either accepted or rejected because of its source, rather than its merit.

Even from bad things, good may come; we therefore ought not to reject an idea just because of where it comes from, as ad hominem arguments do.

Equally, even good sources may sometimes produce bad results; accepting an idea because of the goodness of its source, as in appeals to authority, is therefore no better than rejecting an idea because of the badness of its source.

Both types of argument are fallacious.”

As someone pointed out on another thread as the number of posts on a CAF thread goes up the probability of someone using sexual abuse by priests as one of their arguments against the validity of the Catholic doctrine being discussed approaches 100%.

If you are going to measure the validity of a belief system by the behavior of the worst of its members and opt out of every group in which you can find a member that does bad things, what valid belief system remains?

Yes some priests have done some very evil things to children [and I believe they should be locked up for it for life] but have those of you who are so apt to bring this issue forward as a “proof” against Catholic beliefs ever considered the fallacy in your logic?

Even if we ignore the logical fallacy have you ever bothered to take your “logic” to its final conclusion?

“Priests have been guilty of sexual abuse, therefore I should reject Catholicism”

There are currently over 700,000 registered sex offenders in the United States [only a small percentage of actual sex offenders are ever caught]. The department of justice estimated in 2000 that there were as many as 500,000 pedophiles in the United States and that in 2000 1.3 million children had been sexually assaulted (that’s in one year alone.)

The largest demographic group (in total number and as a % of the population) is married men who molested members of their own family.

Do you conclude that you should therefore reject marriage and family?

The total number of priest accused of sexual misconduct (of all types) from 1950-2002 was 4,392. The police investigated 1,021 of those cases. 384 led to criminal charges and 252 were convicted.

The problem in the Catholic Church, which of course the Church should do everything in its power to eradicate, is dwarfed in total scope and frequency of occurrence in American society as a whole.

Why don’t you use this “argument” as a reason to reject being an American, or being a teacher, or being an atheist, or a police officer, or a Jew or a member of any other demographic group we can find in this vast population of perverts?

Yet over and over again this pops up as a “proof” against the Catholic Church.

Enough is enough on this. Let’s eradicate this arguement from the forum.

There must be some non-Catholics out there who agree with me on this. No?

I agree. It would be a fallacy to argue that Catholicism is false because some of the people promoting it have done evil things. I don’t think the cases of horrific child abuse somehow disprove Catholicism and have previously made that point on these forums.

However, if I were Catholic, these cases would definitely give me pause. I would find it very troubling to hear case after case of the Catholic Church paying money to get victims to keep quiet. It would make me very uncomfortable that some of my money would be going to cover up child rape. Since I would normally stop giving to a charity (or any atheist organization) that paid money to cover up child rape by its leaders, I would become much more vigilant in making sure that I had good reasons for thinking that Catholicism was true.

My point of view as a Protestant is that sexual misconduct by “officials” in the Catholic Church (e.g. priests, monks, nuns, and popes) has been well documented for centuries. To me, it proves that forced celibacy (rather than voluntary celibacy) is dangerous and therefore only one of many reasons to protest against the Church of Rome.

This means that I in essence agree with you that in and of itself sexual misconduct does not disprove the validity of any Church or belief system unless that Church or belief system condones it. Sexual sins are sins of individuals.

I find it funny that anyone on this forums charges opponents of the church with using this fallacy. The majority of people on this forum use this exact fallacy as proof for things that church states as truth.

“Because the church says so” is basically the definition of this fallacy.

Celibacy is NOT the problem. The Church is the Bride of Christ. A priest is already “married” to the Church. Married clergy would be polygamy, which is adultery. And those particular priests who are sex offenders were ordained in the 1970s, a sexually laid-back era.

Because the Church says so it is not a fallacy, it is very logical based on the postulate that the Church has specific dogmas.

Could you show me an example of someone using the genetic fallacy as a proof for Church Teaching? i.e. The Chruch does good things therefore what we teach is true.

This is not an example of the Genetic Fallacy.

You have two problems though, Noone is forced to be Celibate, and Married men have a higher rate of pedophilia than non-married men.

No it would not be adultery for all Catholic priests. Eastern Catholic Churches (not Orthodox), such as the Ukrainian Catholic Church fully in communion with Rome, to which I belong, have been encouraged by Rome to keep and develop their traditions, which tradition allows for married clergy. Ukrainian Catholic married priests are fully Catholic priests, but whose sui juris Catholic Church has a different discipline than the Roman Catholic Church on priestly celibacy. In Roman Catholicism, not Eastern Catholicism, priestly celibacy is a discipline, not dogma however. It could change.

My Catholic priest, like many Ukrainian Catholic priests have wives and children. Rome accepts this ancient tradition for our Eastern Catholic Churches. We are fully Catholic, just not Roman rite. The Roman rite is not the entire Catholic Church, though it is obviously the majority.

You do not betray Peter because of Judas. Yes, the Catholic Church has some Judas’, but it does not necessarily make the institution evil.

As Catholics, the cases of sexual abuse are constantly being thrown in our faces because the media and the public simply eat it up.

Meanwhile, the US public education system has 10,000 daily reported (how many are unreported?) cases of sexual abuse and for some reason, you don’t see that being plastered all over the papers.

This by no means justifies or minimizes the cases against the Catholic Church, but the problem is not with priestly celibacy - after all, the priests in the Western rite already know what they’re signing up for. All of the priests that I’ve met are happy to be unmarried because the demands of their vocations would make for a difficult marriage. They openly stated that it would be unfair to their spouses if they were married.

Sexual assault cases have risen exponentially because our society is oversexed. We are bombarded with ads that are either suggestive, explicit, or blatantly sleazy. Pornography has become rampant on the Internet and the human body has been objectified to the point of simply being a group of body parts to be used for our own pleasure. We’re hit by it on TV, the Internet, magazines, newspapers, billboards - you name it. We no longer treat ourselves, much less others, with the proper human dignity that they deserve. Regular dosages of porn and fantasy put many men at risk of acting out these fantasies.

Regardless of whether we are Catholic, Protestant, or non-believers, this problem is not exclusive to Catholic priests, it is prevalent across the board. Family members are most often the perpetrators. Teachers are also high on the list.

The Catholic Church is trying to do some housecleaning, but let’s see the rest of society do the same rather than simply point the finger.
