Really, but you are Catholic.

We kiss the Popes ring to show that we acknowledge his authority.

What’s wrong with that?

Kissing the Pope’s ring is still very much practiced. I would certainly if there was time- which there likely wouldn’t be. Popes move through the crowd pretty quickly.
Actually we kiss the Pope’s ring to acknowledge the mission that Jesus gave to St. Peter that the current Pope is working to fulfill.

And that mission necessarily involves his supreme authority over the flock which Christ entrusted to him.

I maintained throughout this thread that “I personally would not”, never did I say that others should not. If I ever get close to the Pope I will probably faint !
My husband, daughters and I had the privilege of a private audience with Bl. John Paul II about a year before his death. We never found out whether it was our Archbishop or then-Archbishop (later Cardinal) John Foley who arranged it. One of the Sisters who took care of such things called us and told us to wear modest dresses/skirts of a decent length, covered shoulders, etc. (no head covering mentioned.) Once in th presence of His Holiness, we were pretty much dumbstruck, but automatically bent to kiss his Papal ring. There was a kneeler in front of him so that he could give us a blessing; I got stuck getting up (it was narrow) and actually had to grab the arm of his chair. I kid you not.

If the kneeler hadn’t been there, I imagine we would have bowed to kiss the ring. I didn’t see what anyone else did, as it was one family at a time.

Exactly so! I just wanted to clarify for any non-Catholic Christians who might observe this forum that we aren’t worshiping the Pope.

Personally I would not bow, kneel, genuflect or kiss the ring of any human being. Even Peter, as he too was only human. Certain gestures are for God alone.
I agree .

My genuflections are before the Lord alone .

This shows a lack of understanding of the Priesthood. These people are not just ordinary men, they’re representatives of Christ and successors of the Apostles. Successors of the very same people whom Christ likened to Himself when He said “He that heareth you, heareth me; and he that despiseth you, despiseth me; and he that despiseth me, despiseth him that sent me.” Now, after reading that verse from Luke 10:16, who do you now think the glory truly goes to when we genuflect and kiss a Bishops ring? I’ll give you one hint. They’re Three Persons.

As I said : " My genuflections are before the Lord alone . "

One can quote Scripture until the cows come home , but I will genuflect to no human being .

What do you make of this verse from Scripture ? " Amen I say to you, as long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me. "

So according to your logic we should be genuflecting to every Tom , Dick and Harry .

No way .

I genuflect to God alone .

My dear friend you’re still making the mistake of thinking that when a Catholic genuflects and kisses a Bishop’s ring, that we’re giving glory to a human, which is not the case. No, we’re fully and 100% giving glory to God, the High Priest, when we do such things. There used to be a strong devotion to the hands of priest because it is by their consecrated hands do we have the Eucharist and receive absolution of our sins. The enemies of the Church which knew the importance of the priesthood, used to cut off the hands of priests so then they could not say Mass or convey the Sacraments. The early Christians would keep these hands as relics. I urge and pray that you will rethink your stance good friend and show reverence to our Bishops. They have been given the authority to do things neither Our Blessed Mother or an Angel could do.

If you have the time I would recommend reading this. motherteresa.org/11_Priests/SayingofSaints.html

Thank you and God bless.

Ps. According to my logic you should be genuflecting to every Bishop, Bishop, and Bishop.

I have read the article to which you gave me the link . I find nothing in it as to why I should genuflect to the Pope of Rome .

I believe in the unique dignity of every human being .

If I were to genuflect to the Pope of Rome I would have to genuflect to each person I encounter .

Since this would be impractical , I restrict my genuflections to the Lord .

Yes, genuflect on the left knee (i.e. the opposite knee to the one, with which you genuflect before entering the pews)

Right-knee genuflection = worship (and is thus reserved only for God)
Left-knee genuflection = respect (Pope and bishop [if Pope’s not there])

Sorry you’re still confused. Maybe if I said these actions were a sign of respect to the Bishops office, you would be able to better grasp the reason for the article? The Bishops (and priests) by virtue of their office hold a dignity that surpasses all human beings and even angels.

God bless
