Genuflection during the Creed

Actually, I forgot all about it at the Vigil Mass, but I did it anyways. Even at the OF Masses, many in the Parish do it at all Masses.
 
Our pastor reminded everyone right before we said the Creed. He forgot during the Creed, but the congregation stopped and genuflected, which reminded Father. So we got it done. But this congregation is used to the profound bow, so we weren’t too thrown off by the genuflection.

we were told to kneel at it, though I’ve only just started going to Catholic mass and not officially converted so I didn’t really know it was a Christmas thing
 
My family went to the morning Mass and immediately after the homily I lower the kneeler and told my wife and son that instead of bowing we had to kneel. The old visiting Franciscan father did not mention anything, he just went down on his knee. I did not see anyone else kneeling, but again, I really like to sit in the front pews. During the two catechism classes on the Mass I will tell the student about bowing during the Creed. These are kids that still hold hands during the Our Father because their parents do so.
 
Totally forgot until I read this. I can’t anyway, but I would have done a mental genuflect if I’d remembered. The celebrant is a very old fellow who uses a cane, and had a hip replacement last summer. He didn’t genuflect, and I didn’t notice anyone doing it, but I’m up in front on the side with the choir, and can’t see most of the people. If the other priest was saying Mass, we would have all noticed and probably followed suit.
 
My parish doesn’t genuflect (or bow) EVER during the Creed.😦

I was thinking of genuflecting, but I decided just to bow as I normally do so as to not to give the impression of wanting to make a statement or get attention during Midnight Christmas Mass.

We’re not even that liberal of parish…🤷
 
Our priest told everyone to do this prior to the creed. And everyone did it too!🙂
 
Wow…before I read this thread, I didn’t even *know *the people were supposed to bow during the creed. I’ve sometimes seen priests do a little head nod during that part, but I didn’t know the people were supposed to do anything…:confused:
 
:confused: I was suprised when the priest remineded us at midnight Mass because as a former Anglo Catholic most of us did every Sunday. 🤷
 
I couldn’t get down on my knee to genuflect with everyone around me in front of the kneeler, but I bent down a little and made the sign of the cross when I heard it. I believe I was the only one in the Church who did it, Even though our Missalette specifically asked to genuflect. This was also the mass where kids were climbing on seats with a folk group and people were yelling. And I wonder why I debate how often to attend the EF mass 40 miles away:(
 
I sort of remembered. When everyone around started going down, I realized “Oh yeah, need to pay special honor.”

I noticed some confusion too - half the pews (from what I could tell) was probably wondering why the other half was kneeling, then eventually knelt.

The Magnificat tells you the parts of the Mass when you’re supposed to bow/stand/kneel/sit.

You are only supposed to use the Nicene Creed. Children’s Masses use the Apostles Creed.

The norm according to the GIRM is that you bow during the lines:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he was born of the Virign Mary, and became man.

During Christmas (Eve, Midnight, Day), we genuflect during the aforementioned lines.

If you were to catch the satellite feed from Vatican City, you would have noticed that the Holy Father knelt on a kneeler as these two lines were sung (they sing the Nicene Creed at the Vatican).

For the record, I genuflected at the Christmas Eve vigil Mass and at the Christmas Day Mass.

Not in Canada, we have an indult to use the Apostles Creed all the time, with the Nicene strongly suggested at Christmas and March 25th. Whether or not it’s used on those days depends on the parish. I haven’t heard it in this parish since I’ve been here. Just checked the CBWIII and there is no notation to bow or genuflect with the Apostles Creed although it’s there for the Nicene Creed.

Sorry, Phemie, I keep forgetting that you are from Canada. However, you did pose the question. The genuflection and bow are mandated in the GIRM and are universal, as the Holy Father demonstrated at the Christmas Midnight Mass.
 
We were told to genuflect at the Midnight Mass. However, the priest said it was the only time of year we do it-so I don’t know what will happen at the Easter Vigil.

It doesn’t happen during the Easter Vigil because that particular liturgy focuses on the RESURRECTION, not the INCARNATION. We bow at all other times of the year; however, during Christmas Eve, Midnight and Day Mass, we genuflect when this particular phrase is said/sung.

Thank God, Pope Benedict is leading by example.
