Jack Nicholson is rumored for the upcoming U.S remake, so I tried to watch the original to see how or why this ended up on so many Best of 2016 lists and…this is easily one of the most confusing, “I-don’t-get-it” movies I have ever seen. Was it supposed to be funny? Ha-ha funny, or understated-ironic funny? Why didn’t she just tell her dad, “Dad! Quit bothering me! Go back home!” And the birthday party scene and the “sex” scene, both of which were gratuitous to the extent that they weren’t the least bit consistent with Ines’ character, were absolutely bizarre. She decides spur of the moment to go ‘birthday suit’ because she stubbed her toe? The movie could have been rated PG if it weren’t for those two gratuitous scenes.

There have some great German films recently which I really liked, notably “Goodbye Lenin” and “The Lives of Others,” but “Toni Erdmann” is a huge head-scratcher for me.
