Is it an approved practice, after receiving communion in the hand, to turn to the altar and raise the host, I would assume in thanksgiving, before consuming the host? I would think that having the body of Christ in your hand there would be no reason for this. Is there any Church documents on this? Thanks

This seems to be another personal action that, frankly shows a tremendous lack of theological thinking. Why would someone raise Christ and point him to a symbol? The communicant has God in his or her hand – the approved action is to consume Him.

You mean… holding Jesus up to show him the table… like… WHY? The entire Mass is thanksgiving.

Seems to me that doing that would be the equivalent of holding the trophy you just won in a competition up to the cheering crowed.

It’s Jesus’ victory. NOT ours.

It’s a toast!!! A “Here’s looking at you, kid”!

Why not? People are looking up to heaven in the orans position while the Holy Eucharist is right there in front of them.
It’s not stated that a person can’t do a little elevation like the priest, it’s not in the rubrics!!!

I’m so sorry, I’m being smart. I’m just amazed with what is going on in some of the churches because we “Can”.

Give it time, this will become more and more “popular” and then a “norm”.

This is why my parish prays for those who need some proper direction.

Well, tell those silly priests to stop doing that!!!

why not just thank God in your heart, the rest of us don’t need to see the outward sign of thanksgiving…

God knows what you do in secret, and afterall, isn’t that the main thing?

Peace 👍

I have no clue what the priest at your mass is doing, but my priest is looking to his flock. I think you should tell your silly priest to stop doing it. Mine is not, or is my congregation speading their arms to get some more God on them for the Our Father.

Give it time, this toasting the altar will become the norm at the Parishes of the Libs. No one says you can’t!!!

Is it the priest or the communicants doing this?

If it’s the communicants, this is an extremely ignorant action. The priest has already consecrated the Host, the communicant doesn’t have to ape him.

I haven’t observed this one in our parish yet, but I did notice most of the people at Mass this morning using the orans position or else holding hands for the Pater noster. We have not been instructed to do either, so I suppose this is another one of those “organic” developments. I was taught over fifty years ago to receive on the tongue, get up from the altar rail and go kneel down. I have observed more weird stuff since we have been standing to receive in the hand than I saw in all the years previous. Little bows to the altar or tabernacle, sign of the cross, genuflection to the altar after receiving, genuflection before receiving, etc. Seems like just doing it is not enough for some folks. Gotta add some little riff to show extra strong devotion or something. Humans! Ya gotta love them, but sometimes.
