I am currently in RCIA so I am just a beginner. Any help would be appreciated.

Immediately before or after the reading of the Gospel during the mass, the priest touches his forehead. He then touches his face and then his heart.

Is this a modified form of the sign of the cross or what is it? If it is a modified form of the sign of the cross, why deviate from the standard form?

To remind us that Jesus be everpresent in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts…

it’s 3 teeny signs of the cross over:

the forehead – may the Gospel always be in my mind
the lips – may the Gospel be in my speech
the heart – may the Gospel be always in my heart

and it’s not just for the Priest or Deacon reading the Gospel – everyone may join in.

Before crossing his forehead/lips/heart, he will cross the actual reading in the Lectionary or Book of Gospels with his thumb…

Why do Catholics Scratch their foreheads

This is a somewhat humorous doc that describes a lot of the practices at Mass

I’ve actually printed that out and given it to friends of mine who have gone to Mass with me but didn’t know what we were doing in there and why we were doing it. I had already given them an overview of the parts of the Mass and the purpose of the Mass, but I didn’t want to overwhelm them too much with why we “bounce on one knee,” why “the priest kisses the altar,” much less do the sign of the cross over our foreheads/lips/heart, and that kind of thing.

One of those friends joined RCIA subsequent to visiting Mass with me. She was part-way through RCIA before she had to move out of town. Please keep her in your prayers.
