If you have a crucifix or cross, rosary, scapular or medal blessed by the Pope or any Bishop, be sure to pray with it today on the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul to receive a plenary indulgence.

“A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who, on the Solemnity of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, make prayerful use of an article of devotion, as defined by Norm 15, that has been blessed by the Supreme Pontiff or by any bishop, provided the faithful also make a Profession of Faith using any legitimate formula."

You must of course satisfy the usual conditions for the plenary - be in a state of grace when you do the prayer, receive Communion within a few days, go to Confession within 20 days before or after, pray for the Holy Father’s intentions, and be completely detached from sin.

I have an icon blessed by Pope Benedict XVI. How would I “make prayerful use” of it?

I’ve watched this movie about ten times.
I highly suggest it - if you haven’t watched it.
Anthony Hopkins - really - portrays the temperament of Paul - in a way - quite believable.

Although icons are not on the official list of items from the Manual of indulgences (I put the list above in my post), if they have a cross incorporated in them somewhere then that’s on the list, and even if not I would make use of the icon anyway as you will at least get a partial indulgence if not the plenary under a liberal interpretation.

I presume you would use it devotionally as you normally do, such as say a prayer to the saint or Jesus pictured in it while looking at the icon, or venerating it in the normal way.

Yes. I actually did both things this morning as I have a St Peter and Paul Church handy. I figure though only one can be plenary, the others will be partials.

It’s the icon of Our Lady of Tenderness with the Divine Child.

My friend brought me a St Benedict Rosary from Rome. She said that it was blessed by Pope Francis, but I’m not sure if she committed simony by purchasing a blessed object.

She didn’t. They pay for an unblessed Rosary and then the Vatican blesses them for free only after they are bought. If you didn’t pay her for the Rosary it should be fine as no one paid for a blessing.
I got a blessed Pope rosary for myself and one for my mom the same way.
