Get the Kids Out!

I would say to you, dear friends, it may require some sacrifice, but I urge you to send your children to godly schools. If you send them off to some public school, keep in mind that you are shooting dice with your children’s eternal souls. It is a gamble that no Christian should be willing to make.

Don’t send an eight-year-old out to take on a forty-year-old humanist. I have never seen any people more unhappy than fathers or mothers who have come to me and said, “Where did we go wrong? We gave him everything, and now he’s turned his back completely on everything we believe.” Yes, they gave him everything but a Christian education.

I’m a 40 something year old teacher, and I’m not a humanist. I do everything I can to be a good Christian in a public school, as do most of my fellow teachers.
 
I heard something on the radio recently to get your kids out of public school. I was wondering if this is the group.

Wouldn’t it be nice if every community had access to a good, free/cheap Catholic education. It just isn’t so, though. In our rural area, there a just a few Catholic schools, and they are very expensive- not someplace that very many people can afford.

I get insulted when I read quotes like the one you posted above. I really resent that they paint all public educators with the same brush. And I believe that the best “Catholic school” is the home- no matter where the kids go for reading, writing, and arithmetic.

Training your children?!?

Who’s Dr. Kennedy anyway? He sounds like a dangerously maniacal fundamentalist. I wouldn’t want a kid near him, the way he sounds.

In my country, public schools have optional Religious Education - 100% orthodox Church teaching. But some of those teachers can be a little extreme - telling kids whose parents were married by a JP that they’re bastards and that their parents are going to Hell etc. If the nearest public school has a RE teacher like that, my kids will be opting out. Nothing’s as likely to cause straying from the Church as having to rebel against something that was never truly Christian to begin with. I’m betting those poor parents Kennedy mentions could have that as the root of their problem, and not public schools.
 
I’ll be sending my children to catholic school for sure.

Not because of different views, I’ll be teaching my kids to embrace them, or because of “immortality” as many catholic schools are just as wrong IMO, but because of higher test scores and the fact that their more likely to attend college.

Exactly, We also live in a rural area and the nearest Catholic school is an hour away. That is simply too far to send the kids to school. Our local public school actually does it’s best to instill Christian principals into the children without coming out and actually being Christian. For example in first grade they do Christmas around the world. One of the things they learn is that the Nativity is very important to the people of Mexico. In fact they also color a Nativity scene. The first graders also put on a Christmas concert and two of the songs that are sung every year are Silent Night and Joy to the World. Joy to the World is done with bells.

Not all public schools are the same. It depends on the area the school is in. If the area is predominately Christian you can expect the school to also be strongly Christian in basic beliefs.

Here is something of interest, click here. I don’t know whether or not this will pass but I do know that it seems the more anti-God the coastal states and Federal Government become the more strongly for God the state of Oklahoma seems to become.
 
As PARENTS, WE are the PRIMARY educators of the faith to our children. We should not expect the schools, Catholic or not, to take on this role.
In some cases, parents are blessed with the ability to reinforce their faith teachings during the school day by being able to send our children to Catholic schools… but once again, we cannot rely on the school alone to teach our children the faith.
As a public school graduate myself, I think there is a great opportunity for children to learn the skill and the beauty of evangelization! We are not called to hide our faith, but to live it out in the trenches of this world. If we are doing our due diligence as parents (teaching the faith at home), then our children can have this opportunity to evangelize at public schools.

Boy does this make me think of my grandmother, God bless her soul. She sent all 4 of her children to Catholic school. She told me that back in the day, at least in her area, parents were told that NOT sending your kids to Catholic school was a serious sin. So she dutifully did it. And her two sons were abused (I don’t know if they were abused sexually, although that would not surpise me) and treated horribly by the brothers and priests who ran the school. One of my uncles (a very good man and decent person) totally lost his faith because of the harm he was done there during his formative years. My grandmother felt such guilt and sorrow over it for the rest of her life.

I mention this story NOT as some sort of indictment on Catholic schools—I send several of my children to Catholic school myself. I mention it because I think it illustrates how dangerous it can be to think so narrowly when it comes to the welfare of your child. Just because a school is Catholic doesn’t mean it’s the best place for YOUR child to be, spiritually, physically, emotionally, or academically. I have one of my children in public school because she needs more services than the Catholic school has to offer. And she has been having a wonderful experience there. I think that as parents, it is our duty to discern what the best educational experience is for each individual child—and to discern what works best for the entire family economically and logistically, as well.

Most of the teachers in our public schools are evangelical Christians of the Baptist persuasion, just like Dr. Kennedy 🤷

Parents are obligated to teach kids the faith - heck, the Catholic grade schools I know of have 20 minutes of religion class each week. My public schooled son gets teaching at home PLUS an hour of CCD.
 
Be good parents - teach your children the faith and be exemplars of faith, hope, and charity - and your children will be fine in any school. Trust me, I should know: I went to public elementary, middle, and high schools.
 
Well, I’d love more than anything to have my kids in Catholic school. DS started out in Catholic school but we had to pull him out because there was just no way to make that tuition payment. So, we moved into an area with great public schools and a conservative small-town atmosphere. That’s the best we can do. I do everything I can to teach my kids the Faith and I put the rest in God’s hands…because apart from Him, I can do nothing.
 
Just wondering, have you looked into what Dr. Kennedy had to say about the Catholic Church? Not surprisingly, it’s not to flattering.

I would take child rearing advice from this man right after I got a lobotomy, no sooner.
 
Was this thread mistakenly moved from non-Catholic religions?

I can’t believe that there are Catholics who would take such an antagonistic postion against parents trying to get a Catholic education for their chilren. Something, by the way, that the Church has always taught is best.

The author did not paint ALL public educators with the same brush. He said it was gambling and shooting dice. It is not everyone but it is a risk. Every parent has to assess the risk and ask if the alternative is worth the risk.

And if the public schools stuck to reading, writing and arithmetic, we wouldn’t have such a problem. Parents SHOULD be the primary educators of their chidren but the should NOT mean we have to spend so much time un-teaching the poison that is put in our kids heads.
 
Not everyone is able to home school or send their children to a quality catholic school. Let’s not underestimate the effectiveness of a praying parent and resulting good instruction in the faith.

I’m with you there.

There’s also been a rise in homeschooling, which I believe is why so many states are trying to outlaw it.

Unfortunately, far too many Christian schools teach the same sort of secular humanist nonsense you can get in public schools. I guess parents have to check EVERYTHING, because it is going on your ‘permanent record.’
 
What could be more important to a child than being raised in a moral environment?

And to study all things with God in mind?

Then obviously, you haven’t been to my school and met the teachers I work with. I really can’t see how you can make the statement you made.
