A friend of mine and I are looking for a girls getaway for spring break. So far we’ve come up with these places: Charleston, South Carolina; Amish country, Pennsylvania; and Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Any suggestions on any of those places as far as where to stay, what to do et cetera? Any other suggestions that you can offer? We’re wanting an economic trip with lots and lots of sightseeing.

Thanks!!!

Because me and my motorcycles get around I’ve been to those places. I’d suggest going to Charleston. Might be cold in Pa that time of year, and unless you’re into historical stuff I dunno why you’d wanna go to Vicksburg.

Not spent the night in those places, but from what I could see lots of options.

But then again, I’d probably opt for one of the beaches in the Florida Panhandle, like DESTIN if I was going on a road trip in spring with a bunch of my friends. But don’t let ME influence ya, it’s y’all’s trip.

First pic is what ya find in downtown Charleston, very old South, with a number of clubs in the business district, but we ALL know you’re gonna skip that, cause you don’t wanna get in trouble, so that doesn’t matter right?

The next pic is my friend Peter, he lives in State College, and he took me on a ride through Amish Country. Lots of fertile farm and dairyland, rolling hills. But I don’t know how much fun it is when you’re not on a motorcycle, unless you like standing around watching guys make furniture and stuff. You could spend a day driving the area and get a taste of the culture but after that, what are y’all gonna do?

Big Civil War battle in Vicksburg so you can do that, and tour antebellum homes, but outside of that, I dunno what else there is to do. Another thing about Charleston and Vicksburg, they speak southern English, with the correct accent, Amish Country in Pa they’ll be tawkin funny, so might be a communication gap.

I have a pic of the Mississippi River in Vicksburg, but it’s a GIF and won’t upload for some reason.

So who is Dixie Bell gonna stay wif while you’re gone?

Thanks, Bama. I KNEW you would have good recommendations:D

First things first, Dixie Belle has a babysitter that comes to take care of her and Canopy. So she’ll be well cared for.

It looks like Charleston is moving to the top of the list. I have always wanted to go see Boone Hall Plantation – FYI it was the house that was Mont Royal in the North and South miniseries. I do love history, but if there’s not much else to do in Vicksburg that might rule it out. We’re not night owls since we’re usually up very early hitting all the historical sights.

Thanks again for your recommendations.

PS Hope Meggie calls you soon.

Nan, I would avoid the Amish Country and points north during Spring Break (March?) since snow, ice, etc. is still possible. Also, while the country side is pretty, Amish Country in PA is a very congested shopping destination. On second thought, add two more verys. It is not a get-a-way I would recommend. There is really not that much to see and how much shoo-fly pie do you really want to eat?

I suggest you consider St. Augustine FLA–nice weather, lots of history and sightseeing.

You might want to consider a visit to Washington, DC. A lot of very inexpensive sights to see. You could also visit the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception while you’re there.

I’ll second DC. I grew up there. I’d avoid it during Cherry Blossom time unless you like huge crowds. That’s “tourist season.”

AFAIK, the Smithsonian is still free; you could spend a month there and never see it all. And they’re not the only museum in town. If you’re an exerciser, climb the Washington Monument.

Lots of lovely houses on and around “Embassy Row.”

Lots of theater and music events, too. Lots of history! Lots of great restaurants; it’s very multi-cultural, so you can find just about any kind of cuisine you’d like to try.

Avoid driving, unless you can navigate the huge traffic circles. The Metro was wonderful last time I was there, some 20 years ago.

Cheap? I dunno. Try that website PoliSciProf listed.

Have a good trip, wherever you go.

Blessings,

Ruthie
