Maybe they were busy??? Or maybe they didn’t know the formula??? If worse comes to worse you could always print out the formula and go to a different parish - maybe ask the priest to do it after Mass or something…

Catholig

No they werent busy, and I just spoke to a priest then and he said the only ones who could wear it are either ones in the order or are thinking about going into the order:confused:

I think i might just drive to our nearest carmelite order and get it blessed, which is almost 2 hours away…

Did you seek to have the Scapular blessed or did you seek to be invested and enrolled into the Confraternity of the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel?

Hello,

Did you seek to have the Scapular blessed or did you seek to be invested and enrolled into the Confraternity of the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel?
To be enrolled into the confraternity.

Hello,
To be enrolled into the confraternity.
Then maybe they didn’t know how to enroll.

They are wrong when they claim that only a member of the order can be enrolled into the Scapular. Anyone can be invested and any Priest has the faculties to do it.

But hey, if you are able to make the 2 hour drive to the Carmelite Monastery, that would be a treat (in my opinion).

Id drive to the ends of the earth to get it blessed!
Pray for me that I can get it done.
Thank you
God Bless

The good thing is that once you’re enrolled, you don’t have to have future scapulars blessed, as the blessing transfers. Sounds like that could save you some head-ache in the future.

that is very true. But its worth the headaches 😉

Also, one of the priests i did take it to just blessed it normally, you know, made the sign of the cross over it. Is this considered it blessed now as well?

An ordinary blessing does not cover Brown Scapulars.

There are conditions that come with the blessing.

this link will help you.

“… whosoever dies clothed in this scapular, shall not suffer eternal fire.”

This is the great privilege of the Brown Scapular; whoever dies with it will receive sufficient graces for his salvation. The scapular is not a good-luck charm. Only the faithful servant of Mary who wears her badge with devotion, confiding in her intercession, will receive the grace of final perseverance. The Brown Scapular consists of two segments of brown wool-cloth. One first scapular received must be blessed by a priest. The ceremony can be performed any time during the year.

Lord Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, sanctify+

by Thy right hand this habit, which is to be worn

by Thy servant in love and devotion to Thee and to Thy

blessed Mother, Our Lady of Mount Carmel. By her

intercession may he be defended from the evil foe

and persevere in Thy grace until death. We ask this

of Thee Who liveth and reigneth forever and ever.

R. Amen.

Receive this blessed habit and call on the most holy Virgin,

that by her merits thou mayest wear it without stain; and

that she may guard thee from all evil and bring thee to life everlasting.

R. Amen.

By the power granted me I receive thee as a partaker of all the

spiritual favors which, by the merciful help of Jesus Christ, are

enjoyed by the religious of the Order of Carmelites. In the name

of the Father, and of the Son, + and of the Holy Ghost.

R. Amen.

May Almighty God, Creator of heaven and earth, bless + thee;

He who graciously chose thee for the Confraternity of Our Lady

of Mount Carmel. We pray to her that in the hour of thy death she

will crush the head of the ancient serpent, so that thou mayest finally

possess the palm and crown of the everlasting inheritance.

Through Christ our Lord.

R. Amen.

Just a minor correction in your statement. An ordinary blessing does not invest and enroll one into the Confraternity of the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

IOW, the “ordinary” blessing means it has been blessed like any other object can be blessed - crucifix, rosary, etc. However, that is not enough.

Re: Getting a Brown Scapular Blessed

An ordinary blessing does NOT cover Brown Scapulars.

You may have misread it… Just to clarify…

I did. Perhaps you didn’t read my “minor correction.” An ordinary blessing DOES cover a Brown Scapular. Your statement makes it sound as if the priest’s blessing was invalid. It isn’t. The Scapular is now blessed.

However, it does not enroll or invest the person in the Conraternity, which is the detail you included. 🙂

Thanks guys, i knew it wasnt fully enrolled with that blessing the priest did, but i just wanted to know if the blessing was valid.
Thanks to you for all of your help. I think I might just drive to the source and get it blessed.
Thank you
God Bless

I think the trip to a Carmelite community will be necessary.

From Book of Blessings, (Liturgical Press, Minnesota, 1989, ISBN 0-8146-1875-8, page 561):

CHAPTER 46
ORDER FOR THE BLESSING AND CONFERRAL OF A SCAPULAR
INTRODUCTION
1488 The blessing and conferral of a scapular should, if at all possible, be carried out in a communal celebration. Whenever the conferral is a way of receiving members of the faithful into a confraternity of a religious order or institute, this reception must be carried out by a member of that institute or else by a minister deputed by the competent authority of the institute.
1489 On the occasion of the blessing and conferral, the scapular itself, of prescribed design and material, must be used; afterwards a blessed medal may replace the scapular.
1490 Whenever a person joins a confraternity in order to share spiritually in the life of a religious institute, the particular norms established by each institute must be respected and followed exactly.
ORDER OF BLESSING
INTRODUCTORY RITES
1491 When the people or simply the members of the confraternity have gathered, the celebrant enters during the singing of a hymn suited to the particular celebration. …".

So perhaps phone calls about when and where they have these ceremonies.

Every St Ignatius retreat, on the last day, our priest offers the blessing of the brown scapular to anyone who doesnt have one. You dont need to go to a carmelite monastery, just a valid priest.

Sorry rig, yes i misunderstood your comment. One question though, what is the point of just a blessing on a brown scapular?
