Rock Happy, can I be your new best friend? haha
Can you surf? Never mind, I can teach you. Last time I was there was the big island for the big annual canoe race. I was milling about in the finish area as the last boats came in, and I noticed a little sea turtle relaxing in a little pool in the lava right where the boats where coming in, and lots of people were walking around. The warmed my heart to see that the little turtle was fearless around people. That means the conservation efforts are working.

That is awesome! I cannot surf, but I would love to learn. I am kind of obsessed with anything dealing with being in or around water. I went to Hawaii a few times as a kid, and I was ALWAYS snorkeling. I just LOVED it! However, it was around the time they banned feeding the fish because the parrotfish were biting people. So, I was a little cautious around those beaks!

Yes, you can surf. You just haven’t done it YET. Water is great. As Bucky Fuller says, “we are hydraulic systems.” I am a “dive master”. One of my more rewarding experiences was being a one on one dive buddy for physically challenged individuals to take them SCUBA diving. Talk about fun!!! Getting someone who can barely move under the confines of gravity and terrestrial life, and put them underwater and feeling weightless and moving in three dimensions effortlessly. The couldn’t get enough of it. I buddied up with a 12 year old with severe MS. He kept wanting to go into the water again and again. I had to put the brakes on him to keep him safe. I think we went down to 15-20 feet four of five times. He sent me emails for a while. But I was deployed a couple times, and he stopped. I am still trying to find him to see how he is doing.

Parrot fish, huh? They can be colorful but beaky. I think the bitiest thing I ever caught was a baby hammerhead shark. I was just a kid. The shark was probably 8 inches long. I kept him alive in a bucket for a day, and watched him swim in circles, and then let him go in the ocean.

I went SCUBA diving on my honeymoon, and it was by far the coolest thing I have ever done!! It just kind of felt like I belonged there. hehe. Actually the bitiest thing I ever encountered was a moray eel when I was snorkeling. He decided to chase me…okay, so maybe I was teasing him to get him out of his hidey hole so I could see…I deserved it. LOL. The other thing was a barracuda when I was in the Caribbean. We were feeding stingrays and everyone was really into it and I don’t like being in crowds so I waited until they were done for my turn. I spend that time looking around underwater and I saw a barracuda circling a bit further out waiting for us to clear out so he could eat the bits of dropped fish. Well, I collected a bunch of fish-halves and started tossing them out there for him and watching him eat them.

Those morays can be scary looking because they open their mouths to breathe. They can be territorial too. It’s best not to provoke them.

Years ago I was stationed in the Azores and learned a good lesson in animal behavior and food chain. The islanders have a lenten festival called “Corrida Da Corrida”. Literally bull fighting in the streets, where the islanders tied a 1.5 inch rope around a bulls neck who has already been in the bull ring (portugese didn’t believe in killling a bull in the ring. This custom dates back to the 15th or 16th century), and attached brass balls to the tips of his horns so he can’t gore someone. Anyway the local girls would not talk to a guy unless he was down in street trying to impress them. Since I knew how to talk the local language it was my duty to translate for my friends and their job was to watch my back so the bull didn’t run over me. They weren’t to clear on that part of their function and that led to many an interesting conversations over beers afterwards. They let me down a few times and needless to say I had to run for my life in front of 1600 lb fighting bull. The girls thought I was quite brave, but I thought I was nuts for relying on my friends.

Anyway, a good time was had by all.
