I was raised Catholic (recieved my first communion, first confession), but I became apostate in my angsty pubescent years and was never confirmed. I am 18, Catholic again, and wondering how I go about getting confirmed. I haven’t spoken to my priest about it yet.

Do I need to go through RCIA, or is there another process because I was raised in the church? I’ve studied theology for years, even when I was apostate, and I should need minimal instruction, not to sound arrogant.

Any answers would be much appreciated.

First of all, a big welcome back to the Church, secondly, welcome to the forums!

I truly appreciate your comment, “not to sound arrogant” ! Your theology study has apparently taught you well on the concept of being humble 👍

I believe you probably know your answer, as you wrote about it in your first paragraph. You need to talk with your Priest. Some parishes may require RCIA, as thats the answer for everyone who asks. Others may require an interview with a Priest or Deacon, who if they feel you are ready due to your studies, may allow you to be confirmed.

Talk with him, hear him out. Or talk with several. Either way, welcome back on your journey!
 
Technically, no, RCIA is not for you. You would go through Adult Confirmation classes and then be confirmed.

Practically speaking, many parishes do not have the resources to run multiple programs, and everyone seeking full communion and/or Confirmation go to RCIA.

You will just need to contact your priest and ask him what process you need to follow to get Confirmed.

i did not get confirmed either. The process matters were you are. When i finally decicded to get confirmed the church i went to had one class…RCIA…it was for all those in the process not just those who weren’t baptize or converting. Now my churches back here in houston have seperate classes for adults looking to be confirmed. Just call you nearest one. Either way you might like to sit in a RCIA class. You learn so much, which was really helpful for me since i stopped CCE classes in elementary school.
 
In our diocese, the diocese sponsors classes for adult confirmation that are held in multiple locations to be as convenient as possible for those seeking to be confirmed. They have a large confirmation ceremony all together too, usually on Petecost Sunday.

you call your parish and ask about adult confirmation classes. you need whatever instruction is recommended by the bishop of your diocese for those classes. oh, and hey, welcome home

Communicating with folks from literally worldwide on this forum & other non-religious ones I occasionally frequent, never ceases to amaze me what a very small world we actually live in!!! SJV’s RCIA started last night, I’m on staff this year assisting. And rural WI, well 25 years ago lived in Chippewa Falls for about a year - it was rural then, probably a city now. Can’t say I miss the Leinenkugels though 😛
