Getting married and intending not to have children

As I understand things, they are required to separate, unless there is a compelling reason (e.g., children) not to.
No one told me this.

Have been married for ages (civil ceremony), swam the Tiber last year, was urged to validate the marriage in church, but no one said, “And by the way, you have to go live in the shed until you do.”

To be clear, this only applies when one or both parties were Catholic when they married in a ceremony not properly sanctioned by the Catholic Church. If both parties were not Catholic, then they are not held to the Catholic norms but whatever was included in the range of acceptable for their belief (so a civil ceremony would “count”).
