This is mostly a venting thread I guess, although advice is welcome.

Earlier this year, maybe six months ago I guess, my father in law gave us his old television because he bought a new one. It’s a 36 inch Sony Trinitron XBR. A beastly monster of a television. I didn’t want it from the beginning, and said so. We have a very small living space, and frankly big TVs are just not our style. The largest TV we’ve ever had is a 19" I paid $100 for back in 2001. Prior to that, we had a 13" television I won at my highschool project graduation. TV is just not an important part of our entertainment life.

Now, I probably could have been nicer stating my opposition to taking this old television from my FIL. I don’t remember how I handled it exactly, but I probably turned up my nose right away at the offer and said something like “what do we need that big of a TV for?” Combine that attitude with a history of FIL dumping his junk on us for many years, and you’ve got a situation between my husband and myself that’s at times unfortunately contentious. Last week I bagged up about three trash bags of old clothes given to my husband by his dad. Nice clothes (suit type stuff, probably expensive), but my husband is taller than his dad, so they’re just not use-able and they’ve sat in the closet being stored for the past four years. It irks me to no end that FIL does this sort of stuff, and then I have to throw it away for him.

So, the 36" television is basically broken now, and has been for one month. I was able to figure out how to get it to work again for a couple of days, and then it pooted out again. I don’t have an owner’s manual, but from what I’ve discerned on the internet, this TV is past it’s prime, and really not worth fixing. I can get a nice new television that’s more practical for our living space for the same amount of money it would cost to fix this one. But we don’t even need another television.

So, now husband is once again caught in between his father and me. I hate that. I can’t have this stupid piece of junk (and yes, I refrain from that kind of language around my husband) sitting in the living room with no definite plan through the holidays. I can’t move it myself, it’s huge and weighs a couple of hundred pounds at least. It’s been broken for one month, with no effort or even a word on the part of my husband to do anything to either fix it, or get rid of it. So, I’m having to be pushy. I started the gentle nagging this past Friday. Today I told him if we could get it out of here before Thanksgiving that would be great.

I feel bad for him, because he didn’t ask to be put in this position, and he works very long days, so expecting him to spend half of one of his days off to get rid of this thing, well it just makes me feel bad for him because he didn’t ask for any of this. If it were up to him, he’d probably just leave it where it is for years and use it as a shelf. 😦 I’d like to pay a junk removal company to come and haul it off. When I asked how much DH would be willing to spend on such a service, he said $15-20, but that he’d do it himself. The service I found will come haul it away for $120 and recycle it. :o

Sympathy / empathy / & advice on how to handle this without getting into an argument will be greatly greatly appreciated!!!

DH bought his new wide screen hi def monster TV, for his office fortunately, not my living room, from Sam’s, they delivered it and set it up, and hauled away the old broken one for recycling at no charge. Then I asked the delivery guys if they were interested in another TV, yes, a “gift” from my FIL (now deceased) which I can’t stand as it is too big and takes up too much space, always had bad sound and worse picure, and I HATE having a TV in the living room. They took it off my hands so when DH came home he was too thrilled with is new one to notice I got rid of not 1 but 2 oldies.

Ohhh Totally Awesome!!!

OP… you may want to consider a flat screen replacement if you have a small space… they mount on the walls well. … And get it from Sam’s like puzzleannie did…👍

Call your Knights of Columbus or other worthy charity.

“I have this mondo TV, it needs the doomahicky to be repaired in order to work. That will cost $XXX. You can have it if you come and get it.”

Someone will haul it away.

If that does not work, put it on Craigslist or Freecycle.

If you’re not careful you can get overrun with junk. Some people just don’t like to throw anything away. I have a rule, I don’t accept other peoples junk to become my junk. My wife hates clutter, but as y’ll know it is always hard to stay ahead of it, especially with people trying to give ya stuff. When all they want is to get rid of their clutter.

That tv is definately NOT worth fixin. Call some of those young Mormon Missionaries and tell him em ya wanna tawk, and when they get there tell say ya need to move this TV and then you’ll listen for a minute. 😛

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

ok, I don’t even know what to say… you just crack me up!

**OK, BeeSweet…now that I’m almost done laughing:D

when you say that tv is not important for your entertainment lives, does your hubby truly share your view? Because if he likes anything at all (movies, sports, even just the news!) I think the best thing to do would be to replace the tv. But make sure you do what P-Annie did and get a flat screen with a guaranteed removal of your old monster!

Then, if you and hubby like to rent movies, get a nice dvd player (can get them nice and cheap now if you don’t want to be all fancy) and a movie you will both enjoy and surprise him. Bowl of popcorn, a snuggly blankie, a nice romantic evening…how could he ever be mad?;)**

Yeah, everytime you need something moved, call them up, or request a BOM online or something…eventually you’ll be off their visiting list, huh?

Great idea!

DH and I saw something about this on the news last night. It seems like such a scam–you have to pay a company to take your old TV; they’re going to recycle it and make more money! Craziness.

Anyway, I agree with Kage. I’d call the KofC, I’d call a local thriftshop (ours will pick up donations), I’d check out Craigslist and Freecycle. Then, present that info to your hubby. If he’s stressed and this is just one more thing to have to deal with, it would most likely help him to know that you’ve got it all figured it out and he doesn’t have to do anything. This is how I’d handle it with my DH.

Then, if he really does want a bigger TV, you’ll have room for it. There’s something about guys and those big TVs–DH keeps hinting about our fun money going to TV after Thanksgiving.

well if it’s broke in my house and I’m the gal who cleans and organizes my house - then there’s no one for dh to hide behind. I toss it to the curb on trash day and pay the usually minimal fee that’d add to my trash bill. (I think it’s like $25 for somethign like that pending size) If it’s broke, you probably won’t get someone to take it as a donation.

**After raising this family for years in approx 1000 sq ft home, I have a rather militant attitude about junk, esp broken junk, in my home. ****We don’t even discuss it. Dh knows that anything I perceive as trash or broken or not going to be used by us is at risk of not being here when he gets home from work. **

I’m rather looking forward to February 2009 when all our TVs become useless because they are rabbit ears use only. Dh is a bit nervous about it. He knows how my mind works and he’s seeing the lack of football and baseball viewing time in the future.

**Now there was an issue about saving beer bottles a while back. Dh home brews. No problem from me. Makes a great, inexpensive gift and him and the older boys get some male bonding going in the process of making it. BUT, I opened a kitchen cabinet and there’s all these empty used bottles in it. No problem still. Until. I. see. the. fuzzy. scuz. growing. on. them! EWWWWW! That’s right folks. like only a man can think, he was just finishing his beer and putting them in the cabinet without even so much as rinsing them out! I tossed them all in the trash. Dh was rather miffed. Said all they needed was to be scrubbed and sanitized. Well fine. From now on HE better do that BEFORE putting them in my kitchen cabinet. Okay. He does now. Problem solved.😃 **

My DH is not interested in movies and TV. We’ve spent a sum total of $100 on a 19" television set since we’ve lived together, and I’m the one who bought that set. He never talks about buying a TV, in fact says he can live without it (which I wish he would when Family Guy comes on  ) The last movie we rented together was Winter of '06, and that happened because he was sick and it was cold outside. DH basically does not come inside without a reason, he lives in the yard. He didn’t want the TV, he took it because he does not like to say no to his dad. So, he was dumped on the same way I was. He was actually told several times by his dad to come and pick it up. It was basically forced on us. I have little doubt that my FIL knew it was garbage when he gave it to us. He had just moved into a new home, having moved this big TV from a third floor apartment to a house in the suburbs. From what I read on the internet, these TVs do not like to be moved. I’ll bet dimes to dollars that it started showing signs of dying after FIL moved, and so he decided to sucker us into taking it under the guise of being benevolent. He could have had the old one hauled off when he bought the new (even larger) TV, but he likes to pass off his junk to his son and then pat himself on the back for it. This sort of thing has been going on for years. I have a 55 gallon fish tank which DH shows zero interest in as well which was a “gift” after FIL decided it was too much maintenance for him.

I’m not too keen on donating it, because I know it’s junk. It’s a money pit if anyone tries to fix it. I did send a mail yesterday to join a freecycle group in my area, but they’ve not approved my membership yet. Honestly, I’d feel like a snake passing this thing off onto someone else without the understanding that it’s garbage. It took three men to move it into the house.

Maybe I should call a local TV repair shop and see if they have any advice on how to get this thing hauled off cheaply?

There are people who like to say they got a piece of junk and fixed it. Now, these same people usually don’t fix it. They let it sit there until their spouses get disgusted with it.

The Fixin’ People tend to ferret their finds in places like Goodwill, Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul. They also look for freebies on Craigslist and Freecycle (as others have suggested).

Another good source are those businesses that collect in the name of a charity. They sell the used furniture and such to thrift stores. They will not care if it works. They care that it is big so they can get a decent buck for it.

So, have no fear about donating it. Somebody will think he’s (and there are even she’s) gotten some kind of a wonderful deal.

You don’t have to pay $120 to get rid of it. I assume there’s a place they can be dumped, and maybe a small fee for that, provided you can move it, yourself. (Where I live, it’s free to drop off, but you are expected to take it, yourself.) So, find out how much that costs. Then, find some guy who wants to earn $20 or so. If there’s a $10 dump fee, then give the guy $30 to get it out of your house.

There are people out there who will do it. Try looking at the bulletin board at the supermarket or in the classifieds of your local paper or just ask around. Somebody, somewhere, has a free afternoon and could use twenty bucks.

Other things: try Freecycle. (freecycle.org) All you have to do is list that you have it and somebody will come and take it away. In fact, somebody might even want the broken TV. (There are strange people out there.)

You don’t have to argue with your husband about it. If it’s broken or too small to wear or whatever, just quietly get rid of it.

How long have you been married, dear?

It’s broke. Put it out with the trash. Either the “trash pickers” will grab it by dawn (and take it and fix it and sell it at a flea market) or the trashmen will pick it up when they come by with their big trucks. Maybe they’ll charge you extra, maybe they won’t – who cares, it’s gone.

IT’S BROKE, FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE!!! 😉

(Oh, and if you father in law asks tell him – IT WAS BROKEN!!!)

**Yes, definitely check with your city. We have an “eco-station” that has been a lifesaver when it comes to clearing out the clutter. Anything with a power cord is taken for free. A rare few things are taken for a fee, but mostly the city just wants this stuff recycled and not in the dump.

And I so feel your pain…we have a mammoth TV (Sony as well) that was hubby’s from before we married (yes, it still works). But we have moved it several times in our two-storey home and it is in it’s final resting place until it dies, lol. That thing was the biggest PITA to move!!! If they are going to make something that heavy and with the weight so unevenly distributed, WHY can’t they at least make some handholds?**

Need somethin’ done and know it want happen when you want it to? I have been known to get very creative in these situations.😃

If all the above solutions aren’t somehow feasible for you, then in these situations, I take things apart.:newidea: I’m assuming it has a wooden cabinet or something similar surrounding it that makes it so heavy? There are many ways of doing this, just be cautious with the glass screen.:hammering: You could recycle the timber or whatever else is reusable, and it can be easily put in the car/trash/recycling. for disposal. Dh can get very nervous on leaving the house when I’ve discussed a paticular problem I want to deal with that day!!:hmmm: I’ve learnt to not tell him now, and he’s always sooo happy after the event!:bigyikes: I know, men can get really busy sometimes, so I like to help out where I can! I’ve been known to rearrange the furniture in many rooms in one day, including computers and all the whizz stuffff that goes with it and fridges. I always have a plan carefully worked out beforehand - makes it so much easier than simply geting stuck!:aok:

Good Luck!

👋 TV went bye bye today! :extrahappy: :dancing: :egyptian:

Husband went up to the Salvation Army and asked if anyone was wanting to make a few bucks. So some really burly guy who’s part of their rehab program was more than happy to help. Husband gave him $30, and the SA took the TV cuz they said they have electronics people who fix stuff like that. Well, good luck to them!! It only took him about 30 minutes to find someone to take it and get it out of our possession. Well… two months and 30 minutes…

So, we get a Christmas tree next week. I said no tree till we got rid of the TV. TV is GONE! 👋👍 :yyeess:
