Getting Over Husband's Sexual Past

or I see something of hers in our house. Reality is I am not the FIRST one he’s proposed to (she said yes, but left him, so he ended up with me), our child won’t be his first. I feel I am taking seconds of everything, and he doesn’t see how it hurts me…

.
Ok, men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. Men don’t read minds. We do however like to solve problems. We’re not really into discussing feelings over an issue, but we can focus on taking specific actions to deal with them. Solutions vice meetings.
  • If there are things in your house of hers, I would suggest you get rid of them. I still have the furniture from when I was still married. But if I’m ever at the point of getting involved with someone new-- a lot of it is going, starting with the bedroom stuff. I just kind of redecorated within what I could afford at the time.
It is in fact your and your husbands house, and I think well within the area of reasonable boundaries to make it your home together, comfortable for both of you. Get rid of what makes you uncomfortable- or put some things in deep storage. The best picture of my parents together (dad died shortly after) was taken at my wedding. I wouldn’t ever get rid of it completely, but I’d put in storage until everyone was comfortable in taking it out.

The one thing that bugged me about this is when someone said “Try to see the good in her.” I have been trying hard, but she has been making it difficult. I know this info about her because she herself has admitted that to my husband. Until just recently, my husband has had to draw a line with her, because she always talks to him about her personal life–NOT OF THEIR SON’s–her medical issues, her period, her sexual encounters with her current bf, etc–and that’s what triggered my disdain. Even after we got married, she still WOULD NOT respect boundaries.

And my husband has been passive about all this, because he says he doesn’t care what she says but just don’t want confrontation. I couldn’t take that she thinks she still has “rights” to him, and him not doing anything to set boundaries bugs me. I see it as either he still cares for her or he is afraid of her, because she might take his son away from him. Either way, I am not a consideration. It’s just him and his feelings.

Yes, I knew about all this before we got married. But it’s different when you get hit with reality like a ton of bricks – EVERY TIME I encounter her or her name comes up or I see something of hers in our house. Reality is I am not the FIRST one he’s proposed to (she said yes, but left him, so he ended up with me), our child won’t be his first. I feel I am taking seconds of everything, and he doesn’t see how it hurts me.Unless you are or have been in the same exact situation as me, I guess it will be easy to berate and judge me as being “unappreciative” or “unfair” to my husband. I gave up everything for him, even my past. He is stuck.

I appreciate and will continue to read all the advice here… but I am opposed to seeing a psychologist or a counselor. My peace comes from God, and all the things I’m going through is distracting me from God…

Thank you for your prayers and advice… God bless you all.
I was the one who asked you to try to see the good in her. And I have been where you are! My first husband had 3 children from previous relationships. Believe me, I know it’s hard. I tried my best to get along with the mothers and to encourage my ex to be a good father.

As another poster said, how your husband treats this child and his mother is indicative of how he will treat your future children and you. That is very true! In my case, my ex was a terrible father, did not want any financial responsibility or to be involved in his children’s lives. He treated their mothers shabbily.

And guess what? He was not financially or in any other way responsible for the two children from our marriage. He treated me very badly. We’ve been divorced for over 10 years and he has not paid a penny in child support and has only seen the kids on rare occasions when they were visiting his parents and he happened to be there. I can literally count on one hand how many times he has visited the kids in the last 10 years. Would you rather be married to a good man who takes responsibility for his children or a guy who bails and starts over every time things get real? Being caught between your wife and your child’s mother can’t be easy. Yet your husband is doing his best. Appreciate him for that.

Sadly, in my case, I was the one trying to get over my own sadness and jealousy to bring the children into their father’s home. I was the one trying to be friendly and helpful and to see the good in their mothers while my ex was trying to sweep it all under the rug and pretend the mothers and kids didn’t exist. How messed up is that?

You got a good man there. He’s trying to be a father and to treat his child’s mother decently. That is a LOT more than quite a few men do.

I know it’s hard to realize that you are not the first woman he proposed to. I know it’s hard to not be the mother of his first child. And I know it’s hard to know that you are not the first woman he has been intimate with. But that is the reality and you accepted that when you married him. No one can change the past. What matters is how everyone proceeds from here.

You say the mother is not respecting boundaries. Did it ever occur to you to wonder why? She comes to your husband and talks about her medical issues, her cycle, her sex life, whats going on in her life for a reason. Most likely that reason is that she needs someone to care and she knows he is a good person. And, frankly, whats going on in her life, her medical problems, who she is dating and bringing home and where her head is at does effect the child. These are things your husband should be aware of so that he can protect and parent his son.

Maybe this woman has made so many mistakes that she doesn’t have people in her life who actually care what happens to her anymore. Maybe she is insecure, sad, lonely and desperate for kindness and compassion. Maybe she doesn’t understand boundaries or the reasons they are there.

And, as much as it pains you, she does have a bit of a claim on your husband. They have a child together. It’s certainly not marriage, but it is a lifetime bond. She’s his family, too. She should be able to call him and ask for help if she is in a bad spot. She should be able to call him and ask for help when things are difficult with the child and she needs back up. She should be able to call when she needs a shoulder to cry on. And, if you tried to befriend her, to spend from time with her and develop a good relationship, she may also see you as someone who cares, who can be there for her, and who can show her by example how to be a better person than she has been.

You say your peace and healing come from God. Fair enough. How do you think Jesus would behave in this situation? Would He sit there marinating in anger, jealousy, and focusing on the negatives or would He treat this woman with love and compassion?

I hate to say anything to you because you’ve already married into a bad situation and there is nothing to do about it now. You have my sympathy. I know there are few things in this world that can get under your skin more than baby mamma drama.

One thing that I’ve seen help other couples is insisting that all communication with baby mamas is by text. Don’t speak face to face or on the phone and keep all communication focused on his son. Good luck.

Sometimes God uses us for His reasons. We think He’s putting us through trials, that He is doing things to us, when in reality, He is doing things for someone else. We just happen to be the person with the right skill set and ability to act on His behalf.

God may have chosen you to be with this man as much for the child as for the man. That you can in fact love enough to make that child’s life better than it might otherwise be.

I’ll be praying for you.

I am opposed to counseling because I don’t like opening up my life to strangers, but that’s what I’m doing on this site now, isn’t it? Sigh. Maybe being on here is my first step to getting counseled… Who knows…

It’s hard to “love” someone who makes your life a living hell. I have tried to be nice to her, but she is an awful person, and has done nothing but make things hard for me and my husband. She is selfish and rude, and thinks God is baloney. She makes me look bad to her son, and brainwashes him (who is 3 years old) to tell the court that he doesn’t want to see Daddy or his wife anymore. The kid cries and throws a fit every time he’s with us! I love that child, but he is being influenced by his mother big-time, because we only get him a few days in a month. He acts out when he’s with us. Despite all that, my husband has been passive. “She’s just like that. We can’t do anything. He will grow up and be good.” I refuse to do nothing. I refuse to be passive.

My husband backslided because of her. He was with in a God-fearing relationship with a nice girl and this girl tempted him and used him. He let himself get tempted and be used, willingly, because she was sexy and exciting. Lust, all lust. But he was conscious and willing. For her. He “fell” for her and he left his church and his girlfriend. He turned from his family’s good advice. He proposed to her, lived a sinful life with her, and got her pregnant. Then she left him. Shattered his world. And yet he’s still “okay” with her…

Then he met me… I helped him pick up the pieces… I accepted him despite all that. I married him, even if I knew it would be difficult. Some of my friends say I am so good to him, for loving him. I do love him. But it doesn’t mean I am superhuman, that I don’t feel hurt.

I am on here, because I am desperate. I have tried talking to my husband about this, but he just brushes it off and says I am making too big of a deal of it. Like many of you, he says Past is Past. He doesn’t see the turmoil I’m in. I don’t think he will ever. The past is and will always be lingering. For the next 15 years, or maybe forever… That is, if we don’t get a divorce, which at this point, I am already considering, even when I am deathly opposed to it. With my husband being blase, I don’t think I can handle this.

This is why we are all recommending counseling.

No doubt your husband needs it too!

At the very least check out the church’s options like Retrovaille and other workshops.

This is a hard complex situation. You and your husband are talking past each other and he is avoiding. Counseling helps that. You need help getting through this “desperate” situation.

Your husband needs to document the damaging manipulation said to his son. It’s called parental alienation and is a sure way to get more custody of his son.

Also if she is as bad as you make her out I am not sure why you and your husband are not trying to save this poor child from an ugly place. You don’t need a lawyer and it cost virtually nothing to go to court if you have to.

Not to be harsh, but I mean… you knew what you were getting into with him, right? He didn’t hide his past. He didn’t try to shuffle off his child. Unless you were the person he was with when he was in that “God-fearing relationship” before this other woman… he owes you no apology! He really doesn’t. That’s between him and God and hopefully he’s confessed his sins, done his penance and tried to be a good father. Once he’s confessed, it’s over, especially if it didn’t involve you in any way, shape or form.

Have you ever considered that he brushes you off about this because there’s just flat-out nothing he can do about it? What can he do? Abandon his child? Try to fight for sole custody in the courts? I assure you the latter will fail and will only create more resentment.

He has to live with the consequences of his actions and so do you because you freely chose to do so. You knew the baggage. You knew the history. You knew that this other woman was going to be in your life because she is in your husband’s child’s life. There’s nothing he can do to make this other woman become a good human being. You can pray for her and be civil to her and that’s about it.

Again, that’s not to say that you’re not right to be at your wit’s end because she sounds like a terror… but you have to accept responsibility for putting yourself in this situation and then simply embrace the good parts of your life.

Believe me, all your advice is hitting me in the gut. I am crying my eyes out right now, because I appreciate your concern and words. I will read this over and over and will try to convince myself and my husband to get counseling. Right now, it’s just hard to take this all in, because it is the BRUTAL TRUTH. And I’ll take it… as long as it helps… And God, I hope it does.

It is not admitting defeat to seek help, here or professionally.

That is why we have community and the church, to help in our struggles.

It is a strong stand that you want your lives to be the best they can be.

Trust me as a divorced person…it was the biggest mistake of my life. And the few years prior were spent denying problems, and avoiding hard discussions.

Don’t make the mistakes I did.

God loves you and wants your best. Listen to him even when it’s hard. He works through the small moments in our lives we experience every day.

Thank you, Jon S. Thank you, everyone. God, please bless these people. And please help me and my husband… Please help me… Please God… Please…

I just offered Evening Prayer for you, your husband, his child and even the mother of his child because you, they and all of us are souls for whom Christ died. You cannot know the future, so put it in God’s hands while doing all in your power to make things right in the situation. Like others have said, there’s no need for you to struggle alone in all this. Seek counseling, pray, do what you can, and be at peace. :console:

– Thank you, MJJean, for telling me you’ve been through this, and it seems you’re okay… I just can’t bring myself to see the good in her anymore, because I already tried that, and she just is an awful person. Nothing can change that.

You got a good man there. He’s trying to be a father and to treat his child’s mother decently. That is a LOT more than quite a few men do.

– I know this, but he just doesn’t like discussing this. He says it hurts him and doesn’t want confrontation. I see it as him dismissing my feelings.

– She already has a BF and wants my husband to feel jealous. I confronted her about this already, in a civil way. That we are only concerned about his son, not her personal shenanigans. But she just brushed me off. She does it, because she cannot accept that she has lost my husband to me. She was the one who ended their relationship when she had the baby. She just wanted the child and not him. Then when he got engaged to me, she started talking to him and even asked him if they could go back together. I don’t know her from the past. But she is disrupting my present and future.

Maybe this woman has made so many mistakes that she doesn’t have people in her life who actually care what happens to her anymore. Maybe she is insecure, sad, lonely and desperate for kindness and compassion. Maybe she doesn’t understand boundaries or the reasons they are there.

***-- She’s a conniving, bad person. She tempted my husband before and she has been trying. My husband is just passive now, but I’m afraid my hold is nothing compared to them having a child.

***-- I disagree with this except for the part where the child is concerned. No way will I share my husband with a mistress, because that is what she is. SHe can look for “emotional” help with someone else, because she already had that chance and she left him. Now she wants it back. NO WAY.

You say your peace and healing come from God. Fair enough. How do you think Jesus would behave in this situation? Would He sit there marinating in anger, jealousy, and focusing on the negatives or would He treat this woman with love and compassion?

***-- SInce all this has happened, I’ve been lost and confused and just hurt… I feel so distant from God, so alone… I feel so distant from my husband, because he has stopped talking about this and just wants to brush it off.

That is why I’m in here. I’m desperate…

– I read that and it was heart-wrenching. I am terrified about my relationship with my stepson. Right now, he is small and innocent, but as he grows up, under the negative influence of his mother, I just know that it will not be good. I am scared. But I will pray that you are right… Maybe there is a reason I am in his life… I don’t know for how long, because right now, I feel like I can’t hold on much longer. I do not want to lose my husband, but I don’t want us to be miserable either.

Having grown up with two very good step-parents, I have to say, this life is not for everyone. Even in the best circumstances, you are going to have to plan your Christmas dinner around compromises with your spouse’s ex, or possibly even your spouse’s ex’s ex! Refusing to communicate is disasterous, regardless of how miserable it makes you. You have to learn to communicate with your spouse’s ex and his or her family for the sake of your children. You have to learn a kind of love that is sort of like walking on a tightrope with rabid dogs chasing you. You have to be self-sacrificing, welcoming, protective, etc to your spouse’s children despite the fact that their other parent doesn’t do anything the way you do, puts your down in front of them, you have absolutely no control or say in discipline or rules, you have absolutely no rights, and you have to bend over backward to make them safe, happy, and welcome in your home even if they openly resent your presence. This is not an easy gig and it is a vast understatement to say that it should be given consideration prior to marriage. Frankly, I’d be in favor of mandatory “step-parent classes”, but I doubt that’ll ever happen.

I can certainly be sympathetic about how difficult being a step-parent can be. However, I still say, if you aren’t going to do it right, don’t get into it in the first place. Those kids have rights too and they’ve already gotten a raw deal.

– Thanks for your candor. You’re right, it is not for everyone… Now that I’m in it, and it’s eating me up, I’m realizing I am not and don’t think I can learn that kind of love. Which is why I am considering divorce even if it’s killing me to even think about it. But I won’t live in misery or be part of my husband’s child’s misery. His mother already does that. I have tried to be a mother to him, but I am not and never will be. My husband and I may never have kids, given the stress of the situation and that saddens me to no end.

I just want you to think about these questions?

Do you see what you wrote here as caring about yourself or others?

Are we called to care about ourselves or should service to others be first?

Is “being happy” whatever that means, the purpose of our lives?

I read in these comments;

I want
I need
I can’t
I won’t
I must
I don’t want to.

I think you need perspective. IMO

-I have tried to be a mother to him, but I am not and never will be. My husband and I may never have kids, given the stress of the situation and that saddens me to no end.
That is a huge mistake. A step-mother is not a mother. Keep that idea out of your mind because it will never happen. It would be one thing if she was out of the picture, but she isn’t and she is his mom. You are the step-mom. One of the reasons my step-mom is so successful is that she understood that. (probably because she had kids of her own.) She respected my mother and her rights and she never tried to overstep her bounds and be a “second mommy”. To this day she and my mom are good friends. (They might be sitting on my mom’s patio at this moment, drinking cocktails and talking about what is wrong with me.)

Before you give up on this situation, I recommend that you see if you can find a support group of step-parents in your area. I’m not being the least bit sarcastic when I say that this role requires training. At the very least, seek out advice from an online group or a self-help book. You’re going to have to give up on being jealous and resentful before you get anywhere though. There is hapiness to be had though. Perhaps the fact that you’ve been having difficulty concieving is a bit of a blessing. Maybe God wants you to get clear of this hurdle before introducing someone new and innocent into your life.

I appreciate all your replies and advice. I actually feel a little ganged up on, like not one of you empathize with my situation.
Don’t make the erroneous assumption that others don’t empathize. Some are speaking from experience. This is the second marriage for both my wife and I. I have a step son, and his father is a control freak.
I appreciate and will continue to read all the advice here… but I am opposed to seeing a psychologist or a counselor. My peace comes from God, and all the things I’m going through is distracting me from God…
From what you’ve described, you can’t do anything about the situation and you refuse counseling. The result of not doing anything is living with this situation. Is that what you want.

You are opposed to counseling, but not opposed to divorce? Is that what you really want? You do not have control of your life, and you need help. Please get it.

Plenty of good advice has been given here. If you can’t let go of the past, please seek counseling.

Another word of advice: anyone that his issues with their fiances sexual past SHOULD NOT get married until this issue is resolved.
Too late. I am already in the marriage. Like I said, it was different when it was not in my face all the time, but now that we’re married, it is. ALL THE TIME. And now, I just want to get out before things get worse for my husband and his child. I don’t think I am fit to be a stepmom and because of that, I am not fit for my husband. I want him to be happy, and me being like this is not helping.

You are all right, all the advice here is in support of my husband. He is a good person, but non-confrontational and passive. I will probably let him read all this when things cool down. Dunno when that will be, but I am hoping soon.

And sorry, I refuse counseling, because I am uncomfortable with it. This, being online seeking advice, is uncomfortable, too. But at least in here, I don’t have to be judged face to face. I can read and not get emotional in front of another person or my husband. I am anonymous.

Thank you, Monk. It hurts to read this thread, but I’m trying…
