What advice do you guys have when it comes to getting over self-loathing?
To talk about myself and some background and if one has read my threads in the past, I have a history of living under an emotionally abusive mother, have been constantly sexually harassed as a kid if not borderline sexually abused, horrible, bloody imagery involving death, blood, rape and disease are always passing through my mind and even engaged in some self harm (swallowing shampoo, beating myself etc…) in general self-loathing has been one of the most debbilating things that in my life and because of all my past problems and my present ones, not to mention my own social awkwardness I feel that I’m really not proud of myself.
If one were to scour my own threads one would see that most of them are about me asking for advice and seeing them now, after reading more about social cues, people, psychology, spending more time with friends and getting to know the things they disliked about me etc… I actually cringe and in a way I have to admit that I am a bit jealous of them. I’m not jealous in the sense that I desire their status and possessions in life, jealous in the sense that these people whom I love get to meet other interesting people and make close friends whilst I’m here stewing in my own insecurities.
Why do I even have it? Firstly because in a way, despite all the abuse I underwent I feel I still brought all this social isolation on myself. It was a slow process for me to reject my mother’s neediness and clinginess and to get over my sexual abuse. Secondly, the more I interacted with friends the more I noticed they weren’t too pleased with some of my actions. I used to engage in behaviour that whilst not exactly creepy well, turned out to be creepy (i.e. I used to try chatting and talking with some friends I really liked even when they didn’t really want to. They didn’t want to tell me that I was displeasing them, at least that’s how I feel things went) and thought myself closer to some friends than I really thought were were. Some friends would even tell me off when I went too far albeit gently and not too harshly (I always obeyed).
Because of all this, what I thought was progress for me turned out in actuality to be a step backwards. Secondly, because despite me always asking for advice on these forums I’m not like this in real life. Most of the time and I DO mean most of the time, I keep things bottled up. I really have to be over the edge in my depression for me to release something to my only confidant, my dad. That said, it’s natural for people to think of me as a weirdo after seeing all the **** I said here, so much so that in real life nobody on these forums in their right mind would actually try being friends with someone like me and I can see why. I’m nothing but a creep who has a lot of problems and is most probably mentally ill. I’m a handful, and not a pleasant one at that. If I am so socially challenged, so bitter and full of self-loathing why, why would anyone risk their sanity being friends with me? It’s obvious that I’d be a bad influence on people and frankly this self pitying, self hating speech isn’t going to win me over anyone. I’m not being deep or remotely pitiful, these are just my own insane ramblings. Honestly, all I want is advice. I don’t want anyone worrying about me when they have more important things to worry about.
Now I’ve mentioned before that yes, I know I need friends, I’m trying to get over my social awkwardness but what’s the use if I myself am such a naturally bad person? What’s the point of trying if I am going to keep on falling backwards and if in the end none of my friends really think about me at all?
With this text in mind, how am I supposed to get over it outside a therapist? Honestly, I have nothing to be proud of. All this considered I actually feel extremely sorry for the poor and the mentally challenged; if I have it bad, think about them having no one to really talk to mono o mono.
One other thing is that except for very minor things people never have anything good to say about me. I’m just not the type of person who deserves praise. In order to get to the little progress that I have done I had to kick myself so to speak. I’m not the type of person who takes things gently.
