I am wondering if it would be a good thing not to store books and other books and Bibles that are not Catholic. I am not wanting to change religions. I am very happy being Catholic, however I find may be it would be good for them to find a new home.

I am not a hoarder, but it is hard for me to let go of stuff. Sometimes I wonder if my house would be more blessed if I rid of things like that. Not saying demon possession, but something like that

Sell them on Amazon or Ebay then. I’d consider buying some stuff if you’d be interested. If you don’t want to sell them, then perhaps just donate them to a local library.

I don’t know if this helps but the Catholic Church did burn heretical bibles in the past to keep them from spreading a false gospel. I’m not sure I would feel comfortable passing along a non-Catholic Bible under any circumstance.

I threw away both a Koran and the Bhagavadgita once I had decided they were useless.

    Pax Christi!

Actually, they kept copies of some of these and other prohibited works so scholars could study them.

I still have a odd little paperback: Peter Abelard’s History of My Misfortunes. Can’t believe this whiney drivel was once sinful to read!

Get a copy and enjoy. It’s cheap enough.

    God bless.

I think I understand your dilemma. Lighten the load of incomplete truths and/or babble, and keep only the books which enlighten OR hang on to a few books in order to stay in touch with other beliefs so you can meet them, understand them, and help them find their way to a more complete truth and faith.

My mom was a teacher who believed that we should read both sides. She had a staunch faith and could not be swayed. If I were weaker in my beliefs I would throw out those books so they would not influence me. If I were stronger in my faith, I might let go of a great many books…

You bring up a good question.

Since I believe I can learn from both Protestant and Catholic authors, I have both in my library. I have the Summa Theologia by Aquinas and Calvin’s Institutes. Etc. Both help me understand God better

I am a former Mormon and have kept all of my LDS-related books, although I do need to box them up to make room for all my Catholic books now. I am keeping them because LDS church leadership has a tendency to change the narrative and what they teach. As such, I am keeping my books so I have a printed record of what I believed and was taught when I was Mormon.

That is one of the reasons I want to keep mine, but I don’t know (feel) if that is wise since I should move on and just be Catholic.

I also have non-catholic items like Bibles and such that I feel I should just donate. So many things are online now

All my family are Mormon (even though we are currently estranged) so I don’t feel like I can get rid of everything and forget about Mormonism. I still monitor what is going on in the LDS church. I actually keep my old quad (KJV Bible, BOM, D&C, POGP) in the drawer by my bed because it has proved useful in my responses to many of the Mormon-related threads on this forum. 😉

I do need to box most of it up though and put it away. I know I need to buy some more bookcases but clearing out my shelves of Mormon books would help alleviate some of the pressure. I freely admit that one of my vices is buying too many books!

I am the opposite, I feel like may be I am holding on to it because I see the pretty families and it still gives me that false feeling of ‘happy’ The one thing I do like to keep and I may are the investigators books because they do reprint those. When I first started I got pamphlets and now I have booklets. It is hard to explain. I did have a quad and got rid of it, but mostly because it held a lot of the resentful feelings. The missionaries bought me it. Now knowing how little money they had… I feel bad the quads are not cheap.

If getting rid of the books will help you in your healing, then by all means get rid of them. If it would help you to burn some of the items, then do it. I know of many other former Mormons who got a lot of healing by burning LDS books.

Having grown up in an LDS family, I can tell you that Mormon families are no more happy than other families, despite what the LDS church tells you. Actually, my Mormon family are none too happy about my leaving the LDS church. Becoming Catholic was even worse. Mormon families are only happy when everyone is a faithful Mormon.

Don’t be too hard on yourself about the quad the missionaries bought for you. They may very well have had parents who were sending them extra money.

I tried to sell mine years ago at a yard sale. No one bought them so I donated them to the Deseret Industries. I’ve never missed them.

if they are in fact older books I would keep them to help others understand that the lds church loves to change things.

I was raised Mormon and threw all those books always after I became Catholic.

I inherited my father’s not-small library of anti-mormon materials, some of it from the 1800’s. Some of it is fascinating stuff, other stuff not so much. I also collected waaaay too many LDS books from my mother’s side of the family.

I tried to reduce my library by one bookcase’s worth a while back. My process was to look up each book on amazon.com and check the lowest-price used private sale. If it was more than ten bucks, I’d sell. Anything less than that got thrown away.

  1. Thank you for the clarification and invitation. I’m busy enough with Bible reading and study along with other Catholic publications I’ve started and yet to finish that I’ll put off reading new stuff for a while. Have a Blessed Day.

Isn’t that sad they are only happy if everyone stays Mormon. I heard that Utah has the highest rate of depression too. It is hard to live up to an image.

I personally would love to private message you sometime about a friend of mine
