Getting Sick in Mass

Both me and my brother were in mass today when I started to feel sick. I made it through the Nicene creed but I had to have my brother drive me home. Is this sinful? did we make our Sunday obligation?

No, it was not sinful. No, you did not meet your Sunday obligation, because at that very moment, your Sunday obligation (and by extension and necessity your brother’s) ceased to exist.

To be clear, neither you nor your brother sinned. If your brother can make it to mass later in the day, that would be excellent, but he is not required to. Your Sunday obligation was made, as you say, by your attempt to attend mass.

Sin is an intentional act. One doesn’t sin accidentally. God isn’t the ‘Great Got Ya Guy in the Sky’ waiting for you to slip-up.

I would say your illness was ‘weighty cause’ for both you and your brother not to complete your assistance at the Mass, but if it really bothers you, go to Confession at your earliest convenience.

Not only was it not sinful, but by not taking the chance of spreading whatever you had to those around you or disrupting Mass with more obvious manifestations of your illness, it was an act of charity on your part and on the part of your brother, just as if your brother had needed to stay home with you.

I often thought about this as well. I suffer from panic attacks and dizziness on and off to the point where I feel sick. I almost thought I was going to faint right in mass, however it never has happened and honestly the panic goes away mostly 15 minutes into mass and while receiving the Eucharist. I wish I had an explanation to why this sometimes happens to me during mass. I just try to trust that God understands what’s going on with me and that he loves me. It usually works.
