I just finished reading a thread where the poster asked about preferring one of the three in prayer. I didn’t want to thread jack, but I’ve been wanting to ask for a while…

Who IS the Holy Spirit?

It hasn’t been until recently that I’ve been wanting to picture Him as a person, because it never dawned on me that He was! Yes, I’ve always called him the third “person” in the trinity, but as I began to understand Pentecost and His coming down as a fierce wind…well, that imagery doesn’t lend itself to my need to picture a person.

And could you help me understand something else? The Holy Spirit was seen in the Old Testament as early as Genesis, right? When God breathed life into Man, it was the Holy Spirit?

Thanks in advance!

Most images of Him are depicted as a dove because He came down as a dove as Jesus was being baptised. This doesn’t really show Him as a person per se, but He is a person.

Personally, when I picture Him in my mind, it’s more like a light that eminates from Jesus and God. It’s not so easy to imagine the Holy Trinity separately as three separate persons, so I’ve noticed that I can imagine Jesus, I can also imagine the Father and then I see a light that embraces both these to make them into One God. The light encompasses the Father and Son, but coming from within both. That’s the only way I could meditate on this Holy Mystery.

Somewhere there is a reflection of the Person of the Holy Spirit that describes Him this way (hope I have this right):

The Holy Spirit is the love expressed between the Father and the Son; so powerful is that Love that it becomes the Third Person of the Trinity.
