Ghandi in hell?

Discussing the possibilities of anothers final distination is a waste time. Only valid question one can really ask concerning a famous person such as Ghandi is: If I follow his teachings and reject Christ, will I go to heaven or hell?

Since Gandhi taught non violence and ahimsa or loving kindness, if you followed his teachings I doubt that you would be able to sin against another through violence in thought, word, or action.

It is a shame that the Church teaches that anyone who does not believe in Christ as his or her saviour will go to hell. It is teachings like these that make me happy to be a non Christian. I will be keeping company with Gandhi.

Perhaps, but as well as sins of commission, there are sins of omission. I can’t say what was on the man’s heart, but I would not like to answer for having stood up and publically proclaiming that Hitler and the nazis should not have been resisted.

He said that the Nazis should not be resisted through violence. Gandhi regularly was beatened and imprisoned because of his non violent protests and civil disobedience in South Africa and India. The monks and nuns of Myanmar (Burma) are opposing a violent military regime through non violent protests.

Yesterday I was talking to a traditionalist friend of mine about Ghandi. He said Ghandi was in Hell because he did not accept Christ. At first I was shocked, how could a soul as great as Ghandi’s descend into Hell? Does anyone else have any opinions on this? Is Ghandi in hell?

Whether he’s in hell or not I won’t speculate upon - because we Orthodox do not do this. However, what I can say is that no act is good of itself.

God is good. Right things done for God are good.

I’ve a Catholic work-mate, (and Catholic neighbours told me the same thing) who said I’m going to hell by virtue of the fact I was Catholic and have left that church

what does the church teach? i am just trying to figure this out. we must say that if everyone is saved then what does being a christian and following the christ mean. clearly there is and must be a somehting that devides a pagan a satanist an atheist and so on from those who accept christ. accepting and following christ is a very hard way if you can believe in nothing and still get into heaven then it sounds fishy thtas all. a bit postmodernist. the church has been very clear through out hstory why now is it hard for catholics and i guess orthodox to say christ came and was naile dto a cross for our sins and he came to save those who will accept him.

The Church teaches that all who are saved are saved through Christ, and only through Christ.

Where things get more complicated is concerning what a person has done. Yes, if we knew that a person had indeed come to know and be convinced about Christ and his Church, and rejected that knowledge, then they would be culpable for their choice. But we cannot know that, and cannot act as if we do. What can truly convince one person might not truly convince another. (Remember, the legal concept of the “reasonable man” is known in legal circles to be a legal fiction.) To conclude that a person had rejected such knowledge would be to undertake the judgement that we are ordered not to undertake. We can observe a person, and discern that their actions, statements, etc. have placed them in peril of judgement, but we cannot undertake that judgement ourselves. That judgement is reserved to God the Son, Jesus Christ.

That is why to say “so-and-so is in hell” is not a statement we can make. To make it is to assume a role reserved to a member of the Holy Trinity.

Let me help you answer it by giving you some facts.

I was baptized, raised and educated as a Catholic. I no longer believe the Catholic Church is the one true Church. I no longer believe that Christ was the son of God. I no longer believe that there is a God. These statements are true and reflect my firmly held beliefs.

not to get personel but i was allways taught and i still believe that if you do not accept christ and his teachings then yes sadly the gates of hell are open for you. christ spoke of hell more then heaven and he did say no one comes unto the father except through him. again i say this in all seriousness hell is real and i pray none of you talking with me, and i realy pray i dont come any place close to it. believing alone is not enough you must act. meaning do what he --christ told us. as for the buddhist who was catholic and now does not even believe in christ and the father i beg you please come back to christ.see a priest and pray for forgiveness. playing with your soul is a big risk. so i guess no one on this thread will dare answer me straight.

also i must add being a good guy is just not enough. i mean how ever we define what a good guy is most will say “oh that fellow breaks no laws he’s a good guy” and blah blah. folowing secularlaws is not enough to avoid damnation. so im sure there ar emany good guys here on this threa di wouldlove to have apint with but drinkin buddies doent hold the keys-----i believe the church does hence whats on the holy see’s flag and it scoat of arms.
i dont know if i am getting to heaven but i will tell you this. i accept christ i pray every day and i realy realy struggle with sin. with the guidenc eof my spiritual director hopefully i will find my way.

but in genesis she is promised. it is called the protoevangelium.

The Jews in the Old Testament did burnt offerings, sin offerings, etc., to atone for their sins and please God so that they might get to heaven. When Christ came, he was the ultimate sacrifice. He bore the pain and shame of humanity’s sin, and that sacrifice meant we didn’t have to perform our own sacrifices.

Regarding the billions who haven’t heard the name “Jesus”, I believe in a God that is merciful.

Thank you for being concerned about me. I sincerely believe I will not go to hell. I sincerely believe you will not go to hell.

Hell is for really bad acts and even then is a temporary state for mortal beings. These beings in hell will eventually die, and be reborn to another plane of existence. There the beings will live, die and be reborn again. This is the round of samsara, the wandering.

A moral person who lives a life of kindness and compassion will reach the heavenly realms even if they are not Buddhist, even if they are Catholic even if they follow no faith. Heaven too is a place of mortal beings who when they die will be reborn into another life. The goal of Buddhism is to end the wandering; end the becoming. The goal is release.

Please live your life without fear. Continue to live in peace and with kindness. All will be well.
