Why does everybody have to figure everything out? Why can’t it just be left to “we just don’t know” and let it go?

Personally- I think this is a big product of imagination. I also don’t agree with the stories and books that go on and on about the souls in Purgatory attending Mass in parishes on earth with their guardian angels, ghost priests celebrating Masses, etc. We are not obligated to beleive in them.

At best, this is a private vision, and not meant to be blabbed about on CAF; at worst, some sort of demonic vision that needs a priest and ought not to be blabbed about on CAF. The in between could be anyhting from a psychotic episode to a residual to a vivid imagination, and ought not to be blabbed on CAF. Suffice it to say, we don’t know:shrug: and I don’t want to know.

I guess if it’s a residual haunting it can’t be valid because it’s a reflection of a host someone else already received. But if it’s a spirit trying to tell you something, I can’t think how to take the message… maybe a reminder to go to Mass, but you’re already there. Maybe a reminder to pray for your priests?🤷 Or a request to learn more about the history of your parish.

No, there is only one Holy Ghost…
a ghost mass would not be valid because they would not be under a bishop anymore. once the bishop knows a priest has past he is taken off the roles as retired.

Wrong. It is a permanent change to the soul at ordination. (“You are a priest forever, according to the Order of Melchizadek.”)

This is part of why clerics are buried vested for the Divine Worship service.
There is no need for the mass to be offered in heaven. We will be in the presence of God in the truest ways, unincumbered by human limitations and sins. The mass is heaven on earth (unity with God), so what would be the point of heaven in heaven (unity with God while united with God)?

When you die you are immediately judged and if you die in a state of mortal sin you go to Hell immediately. If you die in a state of grace you are saved and either go straight to Heaven or more likely with a stop in Purgatory first. There is no such thing as souls who still linger and have not crossed over. Sometimes, for his own reason God will allow us a glimpse of a soul in Purgatory or Heaven.
Any ghosts seen on earth are almost certainly from Satan.
Not necessarily. Our Lord, when meeting with Doubting Thomas told him He wasn’t a ghost, it was really Him. <-I’ve always known they’ve existed because of this.

St. Padre Pio saw a young monk working around the altar one day. He asked him what he was doing. He replied that was his Purgatory, as he hadn’t paid attention (the respect due) when he was assisting at Mass. He asked for prayers to release him, Padre Pio did, then saw a vision of the young monk entering Heaven (his glory).

I saw our mother at a low time in my life, about a month after she died. It was a glimpse, but it was her.

No, all ghosts are not from hell.

bpbasilphx, to whom you were responding, said that the function of the ordained ministry is for this life only.

All prophecies found in the Bible have been fulfilled except those referring to the “last days.”

In the centuries since the canon of sacred Scripture was determined, many saints and mystics have claimed the gift of prophecy. Since all such comes under the heading of private revelation, it is never binding upon the faithful to believe.

I believe that God gave us the outline, and prophets and mystics exist to give us the details, when He sees fit. We are to discern everything, and to rely upon the Church for final decisions—discerning everything (like I wrote), in the case we realize something is outside the Faith.

If you don’t like this sort of thing, maybe you should steer clear of this sort of post, and refrain from replying? 🤷

I’ve always wanted to know all I can…“What makes it tick?”

If I saw that occurrence, and if it were seconds before I reached the front of the line, I would just move to the other line. What if you got up there and he vanished? Or if you were never sure it was even real? You wouldn’t know whether you received communion or not.

Its a public discussion forum. Are you saying forum members should stay away because they are not allowed to have different opinions from you?

It is far more theologically correct to say that we do not know of any posthumous role, not that there is no such role.

Why do you say that? The EF is heaven.

**I meant to say OF. Sorry.

But ALL authorized Eucharistic rites of the Church, properly celebrated (including that nasty ole OF/NO), are heaven.**

That’s where I got my answer.

Some people need to learn a bit about the priesthood, it seems.

The earthly liturgy is a reflection of the heavenly liturgy. Hence, a priest can only offer Mass on earth - not in heaven. Therefore, ghost priests cannot offer a Mass on earth - because if they are in heaven, they cannot offer Mass period (and if they’re from hell, why would they offer Mass? The damned hate God and have no way to salvation)
You have it correct but it sure is fun reading all of these “Ghost Stories”. Jesus left us a visible Church with a visible Pope and Bishops. That is what He left for us while we are here. When we are in heaven then we will be reunited with those who passed before us. It makes no sense to have a priest come back from the dead to say Mass…teachccd 🙂

Okay; I see.

Just wanted to make sure it was understood by all that nothing bpbasilphx said was in denial of the fact that Holy Orders permanently affects the soul (like baptism and Confirmation).

This article on ghosts has been cited in the Ask An Apologist forum. It may help with understanding “ghosts” (and the problems with the “residual haunting” theory.)

Seven Kinds of Ghosts
By Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

If there are Ghosts offering Mass, isn’t it just a matter of time before Protestant Ghosts start appearing and holding their own worship services? Should we look for this next Oct. 31? 🙂

I have a picture of my husband and I standing in our living room, and in the background is ghostly shadow of a cowled monk, and it is clearly identifiable. It is the freakiest thing I ever saw.

We showed the picture to our friends and family and they were amazed. Then, one day I was cleaning my living room and the “lightbulb” went on in my head. In one of the corners of my living room I had a table, and on it was a statue of a cowled monk. Somehow, when the photograph was taken, the reflection of the statue in a nearby window got superimposed on the picture, and it looks like we indeed had a ghostly visitor. This is the only type of “residual effect” I’m willing to believe in, but at the time I was beginning to wonder…
