First thing: Caylee, I am guessing from your other posts you don’t speak english? I guess you are using some sort of translator, or at least it sounds like you are. It’s perfectly okay if you don’t, we will do our best to help you nonetheless. Please know that sometimes it is a little hard for us to understand you.

Second thing:
No, Ghosts do not exist. The souls of the departed DO NOT remain on earth.

However…
And that’s a big However…

There are Demons. Ugly and foul creatures from Hell. They do what they can to tempt, spook and to point your minds and hearts to lower things. Beware of them. They can possess people, hence the need for Exorcists in the Church. You must continue to pray that they stay away from you, a simple sign of the cross can cast them away, or a crucifix.

If you want to keep such things away from you especially, develop a Devotion to St. Michael the Archangel, the destroyer of demons. Through his prayers and intercession you will be protected:

Oh, and maybe try praying in Latin! THE DEVIL HATES LATIN!

God bless you and your family. May the Sacred Heart of Jesus have mercy on you and bless you!

Is ghost real?
The Holy Ghost is real!

The English word “ghost,” by the way, is derived from the same Latin word from which we get the word “spirit” (but “ghost” comes to us through Germanic languages, which is why it is so different phonetically). Theologically, the words “ghost” and “spirit” mean the same thing. And Catholics believe in spirits.

But you probably mean “ghosts” like you see on TV and movies. The Church does not teach about this one way or another, and Catholics are free to believe or disbelieve in such things. But I spent several years of my youth living in a haunted house (really - the former owner shot himself in his garage), and our family experienced many strange events, so I tend to be on the believing side.

Well, no… not exactly…

The Church does take a teaching on the dead, and teaches that they are judged immediately after death, and thus either take their place in Hell or enter into a period of purification in purgatory, which in time would lead them to an eternity in Heaven. That’s it.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church also warns us not to conjure up the dead or to react to anything that may resemble it, primarily because it would be false and maybe even a deceptive or evil spirit, a Demon for example. (CCC 2116-2117)

There are Spirits, both evil and good. Angels and Demons. Agents of God and Agents of the evil one. But human souls depart the earth after death, hence why we call them the faithfully departed, their souls have left us, but if they are to enter the Kingdom of Heaven, they will be with us again in prayer. If not, then we pray for them nonetheless.

Ghosts, as in dead people coming back to communicate are not a thing of God, but of Satan, and such practice of communication is to be avoided at all costs.

Pray, pray and pray my friends!

Yes anything “playful” moving objects or what not is probably demonic activity. However I have recently heard some Catholic theologains say it is possible that souls in the lower levels of Purgatory could also explain some “Ghost” reports. In other words the veil between this world and the lower levels of Purgatory might be extremely thin. Since they are in the lowest levels they are suffering greatly. Which would explain 'Weeping apparitions", Calling for Help, and the “dispair” aspect that surrounds the lore of Ghosts and hauntings.

Either way it is nothing to mess with and the church says to leave it alone.

The point in bold above is important, there could be a chance that some of those in Purgatory are working out their purgation here on Earth. I’m not sure I’d make that argument myself, but DeusSalusNostra’s claim that the Church has definitively taught against ghosts isn’t true. Of course, if documentation to the contrary is provided I’d stand corrected. Further, the Church doesn’t teach that Heaven and Hell are places far away and hermetically sealed from this world. Rather, they are more like different dimensions (i.e. you can’t go to them via a space ship) and there certainly is interaction between these realms - we are in communion with the saints after all. I’m not sure I personally believe in ghosts, but the Church doesn’t forbid believing in them either. And it seems like our first pope might have believed in them too (from Matt 14)

*26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”

28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”*

Yes they do… no Doubt about it… Just wish I could have a chat with them…
But thats a bit difficult…

I’ve been very interested in the study of ghosts for a while, and I recently became more interested in the Catholic side of it. I wondered if anyone here had more resources for study, and I am also interested in hearing your comments about ghosts.

The Church acknowledges the presence of ghost (spirits). It’s a sin to initiate communication with them and we should just pray, as they might be sent from Purgatory seeking prayers or Heaven. Or, they could be demonic, no one really knows. Shows like Ghost Adventures use these spirits as entertainment and for our viewing pleasure which is just wrong and unjust. They are directly going out of their way to talk to ghost.

I do not believe in ghosts. I am sure we have Angels among us, but they are not ghosts. To toy with “supernatural” things is a sin. I do know there are a lot of “real ghost pic’s” in the net, and yes, I have been looking at them only to find out that they are far from real.

A very important thing to remember is that “ghosts” seem to be visible only on photos, and many of those pictures are very strange. I mean, who would take a picture of a empty stairwell? Or a random photo of a cemetery only to later on see a woman in the picture, showing a very clear shadow? Sadly. to many people theese pictures are very frightening and can lead to many problems. So I think that they should be removed from the net, but that is thing that will never happen. I do admit that sometimes we all see something that don’t make sense to us. That however is not to see a “ghost” but mostly a trick of your vision playing with your brain.

I do remember that when I was a kid I saw in the evening paper a photo of a “ghost”, upside down, only the head, hovering over a old-time voice recorder. And boy I was afraid, I could not sleep for a few nights, so I recomend that nobody look at those pics.

And I have one more example on how easy it is to imagine something if one really want to. (Yes, I do drag in the thread about the "vanishing priest once again.) This is how it works. Someone did mention that the priest was not visible on any of the “tons” of photos taken that day on the accident site. You started to belive that really was the case. And because of what you wanted to be true your brain did work “on it’s own” hindering you from see the “truth”. On the picture of Katies car you can see the priest bending down, in a normal priest suit. But because you did not want to see him, you did not. Our brains do that sometimes. Sometimes people want badly to see a “ghost” and most likely will see on, but keep in mind that it is only your brain playing around with you. And if you do not see a “ghost” you make your own, IOW, you take a picture and add what you want to see. I can do that on my mobile-phone camera, and my mobile is not very sophisticated,

But what I like to add, do not play around with “ghosts”. Just because I don’t belive they are real does not mean they don’t are.

?? Is ghost real? They exist??
If there are ghosts they are definitely not the souls of dead people waiting to cross over.
When we die we are immediately judged and if we die in a state of mortal sin we go immediately to Hell or if we die in a state of grace we are immediately saved (either straight to Heaven or Purgatory first).

I do believe ghosts exist. I saw a post in another section and people stated that ghosts especially ghost show were just tv dramas, but I have heard from family who would travel from Mexico to Texas and talk about stuff that they saw on the road, or ppl appearing to them. I do believe that a prayer must be said bc you never know what it is.

But I’m the one who thinks that they exist.

Well, if you believe in ghosts you do. I can not say if it is right or wrong, I don’t know what The Church teach about that, but I know that interacting with dead people is a sin, and a ghost is dead, I reckon. I would however suggest that you maybe should talk with a priest and take it from there, I mean, if you are a “ghost-hunter”. If you just believe they exist enjoy your “faith”, maybe a bit odd word but can’t think of a better. Main issue though, some things are better to leave alone and do nothing.

The house I lived in when I was in my late teens had ghost activity, Upon waking up one morning, I had a view of the hallway and stairwell going downstairs, I saw what looked like a kids ball, about 2ft in dia, it was grayish color, and was just floating around the stairwell, near the ceiling, it never took the form of a person, but it was clearly something strange, there was no one else in the house, and I had just woken up, so if it was truly a demon, why did it not try to scare me or do something else? Just floating around near the ceiling is not evil or good, just indifferent IMO.

I dont think any of us can be sure exactly what ghosts are, just something we are not able to understand, but I have a feeling they may come from some kind of parallel dimension, and some areas/houses, the ‘veil’ is thinner, sometimes allowing strange things to show up, but I think its important to keep in mind, if this is true, we are probably not seeing it entirely.

Once someone dies ,their souls go either to heaven ,purgatory ,or hell.Specters ,poltergeist ,zombies ,the undead ,etc are things of fiction and folklore.Nobody and no thing can exist beyond the grace of God .As it says in Sacred Scriptures when we die we know nothing and we remember nothing,we go back to a state of non existence.I believe in angels and demon’s ,but I reject any notion of dead people working around as ghosts .

The Church teaches ghosts exist. For example

A ghost appeared in Lourdes France. IT was not a physical but ghostly appearance of our Lady.

The Church has authorized many appearances. Many accompany the miracles required for the canonization of a saint.

Why does the devil hate latin? Latin was the language spoken by those who killed the Son of God. I wouldve thought that was his favorite.
