I was recently a part of a focus group at my parish where we explored how to get more people to come to Mass. We began talking about how to get the people who do come to participate more and one person said the way to do it is to get a couple of those giant monitors. That way people aren’t having to look in a book, they can be looking up and therefore being more attentive. That sounds so…well…Protestant to me. I voiced that concern and she looked at me like I had two heads. What do y’all think?

In Christ,
Nancy 🙂

TV screens? Great idea! Will they have “1/2 time entertainment” also?–nicolo

I can’t even believe someone would suggest that and think it was a good idea. Lord have mercy.

Hi Nancy–Read the part about 1/2 time entertainment!! I was just kidding. LOL!–nicolo

If you do that, make sure you get a qualified electrical contractor to install the outlets and other electrical appliances that you’ll need. You want to make sure its electrically correct.

President Clinton was right , church fires are a real problem, although not for the reason of prejudice that he suggested.

Oftentimes churches get el-cheapo and mickeymouse with this kind of thing, and with that many volts running through a building that is only open a few hours a week, you can see where something could go seriously wrong.

Pretty much my thoughts. I can see how it would works at a church service, but Mass is…well…MASS!! It seems irreverent and unnecessary.

You can talk to the pope about that one, papal stadium masses certainly have big screens.

It seems a bit much to me for a smaller gathering in the local oratory, but on principle, there isn’t anything intrinsically wrong with the plan.

I suspect…and this is just a hunch…that the purpose for having them at a papal Mass and at my local parish wouldn’t quite be the same. But as I said, it’s just a hunch. 🙂

Don’t forget the popcorn and soda stands. 🙂

Our parish went through this after we got a new Priest. I was shocked when I saw it! It disappeared when one of the Priests accidentally walked into it during Mass.

What was it used for?

I can understand a papal mass where you have millions of people, but not at a parish. I’d think it would lend more to the idea mass is entertainment- and you don’t generally participate with what you watch on tv wether you are there or not- you just watch it.

It just doesn’t seem right. People should want to go to mass because they feel it in their hearts. whats next popcorn and pajamas??

Crackerjacks and scorecards. Door prizes–if your name is picked you can win an indulgence. Betting on Saint Canonizations. Audience participation in “Priest for a Day”.
Jukebox with Hymn selections.

Will ther be a reality tv show about it?
Another great idea! It will be “live” so we can watch ourselves making fools of ourselves!–nicolo

St. Dennis in Royal Oak, MI does something similar: Two slide projectors display hymn lyrics on the upper left and right side walls of the sanctuary.

I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when I saw the credits in their bulletin:
Lector…
Altar Servers…
Eucharistic Ministers…
Projectionist…

And they were those loud Kodak Carousel projectors. Every time the slides changed, you heard that ker-chunk! sound. Really conducive to prayer.

I think its unnecessary at Protestant services as well, LOL 😃 But then I like hymnals because if you don’t know the song you have the notes! 😃 (unfortunately though - not that large a percentage of the general can read music these days)

Aside from the ker-chunk did you find that lyrics being on screens helpful? Did it seem that more people participated? That seems to be what the person that proposed this was thinking
