How tall were the giants in the Bible? How did they come to be, and where are they now?

Cool question! 👍 I think this could generate many interesting responses. Possibly better than the dinosaur threads!

After a brief internet search:
How tall were the giants in the Bible?
Didn’t find any info on that.
How did they come to be
WOW! I came across theories from descendants of fallen angels to space aliens!
and where are they now?
Didn’t find any info on that, either.

Aball, please don’t think I’m making fun of you or your question. I really do think it is very interesting!

I have heard about this too. As to how tall they were, I believe it was said to be around 10 to 15 feet tall. I may be wrong on that. On how they came to be was that the fallen angels has sexual relations with women thus resulting in giants. I also heard that they were all killed with the Great Flood of Noah.

Maybe someone else can give a better response.

I follow one of those alien theories. Genisis 6 says “the sons of God came unto the daughters of men and had children by them.” They were called “the Nephilim.” I believe the Nephilim are aliens. I listen to alot of alien obduction testamonies and it always has to do with the reproductive organs. And from as they’re described, are quite tall. Also, you may have heard about USOs. Unidentified SUBMERGED Objects. UFOs are seen scattering off of these underwater vessels. So “aliens” probably aren’t from outer space, rather, from the ocean. And what wiped out the Nephilim? A FLood.

Scripture tells us that fallen angels had relations with human women and that the offspring were giants. Presumably, they disappeared in the Flood as previous posters have already written. What aliens (provided that they do exist - a question for another thread!) could have to do with it I have no idea, but I am not a ufologist… 😃

Here’s the Scripture passage, by the way:

[BIBLEDRB]Genesis 6:1-4[/BIBLEDRB]

Hi, I see this thread is old (2010), but I am wondering if anyone is still interested. I have been reading about theories regarding the Giants for some time and have come across all kinds of theories, some more wacky than others. I am really interested in hearing a Catholic opinion. I have to believe that the giants were real as they are mentioned several times in several contexts in the Bible ( I don’t have a concordance with me but if you do, look up Nephilim, Anakim, Rephaim, Giants, King Og, Goliath and there are more).

Genisis 6 also says that they were the “Fallen Ones” who took wives of men, and they were there after the flood too.

Origin of the Nephilim according to the New American Bible: Genesis 6: " 1When human beings began to grow numerous on the earth and daughters were born to them, 2the sons of God saw how beautiful the daughters of human beings were, and so they took for their wives whomever they pleased.a 3Then the LORD said: My spirit shall not remain in human beings forever, because they are only flesh. Their days shall comprise one hundred and twenty years.

4The Nephilim appeared on earth in those days, as well as later,* after the sons of God had intercourse with the daughters of human beings, who bore them sons. They were the heroes of old, the men of renown.b "

There seems to be possibly three categories here. One: The Sons of God, and Two: the sons human women bore to the sons of God, and three: the Nephilim.

Some theorists say “the Nephilim” must be aliens, and I am not apposed to this as I reserve that there may be aliens.

Some theorists say the sons of God are the fallen angles and I do think this might be possible as there are stories of good angels “wrestling” with people in the bible, and eating food and being among people who did not realize that they were angles, so they must have the ability to have bodies (thus could have sex. But not sure if I think they could procreate being a different species, however Genisus 6 says they had offspring…?).

And if they [the Sons of God and/or the Nephilim] survived the flood (and there are several theories about this, if you care to dig) where did they go and where is the archeological evidence. If you believe some of the stuff on the internet ( a scary prospect!) then there is some major cover-up to conceal the evidence. But to what end?! and by whom?

I want to know what the Catholic position is on whether or not the Church takes Genisis 6 and other such references to the giants is meant in the true sense of very tall (some site 12-35 feet. Deuteronomy 3:11, “Og, king of Bashan, was the last remaining survivor of the Rephaim. He had a bed of iron,* nine regular cubits long and four wide, which is still preserved in Rabbah of the Ammonites.”), or Men of renown, in the sense that they were powerful and good warriors.

And who are “the Sons of God” and are the Nephilim Fallen angels, aliens, or perhaps aboriginal peoples (perhaps Neanderthal who are sited as being tall by some research quoted in a recent article in Scientific America (sorry don’t have the reference) of which we all carry some DNA unless you are from sub-Sahara Africa), or is the official position: We don’t have an official position?

Thoughts?

thanks

Such a GOOD question, not may seem to want to tackle it. Here is another…where did Cain find a wife?

I would say that Adam and Eve were the first two homo-sapiens. Cain and Abel likely had sisters. I would also say that incest was allowed in the very beginning to help fill the earth. They didn’t have much choice. The Nephilim were not pure homo-sapiens but rather a different kind of hominid and existed along side man. They were referred to as something other than sons of man. An analog in history would be Neanderthals which we know interbred with homo-sapiens.

I cannot give you a authoritative answer from the Church’s view. But, I can give some insight.

**“There were giants, those renowned men that were from the beginning, of great stature, expert in war.” Baruch 3:26
**
So this quote clearly refers to great size, heroic like (renowned), and warriors! Makes you wonder if the Greco - Roman mythology has some basis in fact?

In regards to the “Sons of God”; the Apocryphal books of “Adam and Eve” (two books) claim two groups of Adam’s family. One which followed Gods way, and Cains people that were not following God. If you consider one group as the “Sons of God” or followers of God; and the other group as Cains people. Then it was the fall away from following God, that produced the giants when the good went and mixed with the bad.

Alternatively, It could be aliens or demonic activity that produced them, you can find those books easily for yourself.😃

Such a GOOD question, not may seem to want to tackle it. Here is another…where did Cain find a wife?
"… every one, therefore, that findeth me, shall kill me." Genesis 4:14

This was Cains retort to God after the curse for killing Abel, it implies that there were many other people around. The problem is the Church has very specific, defined dogma which we have to accept as Roman Catholics. The common origin of all mankind from Adam and Eve, Original Sin from these parents, etc. But, also the Church has not said a great deal in Ecumenical Councils; only what is necessary to deal with errors. So that leaves a undefined grey area for speculation. My opinion is we don’t know everything that happened in the past, and solutions might be discerned in future research, and archaeology …hopefully. He found a wife, but they’re all from Adam some how… a mystery!:juggle:

The reference to the Nephilim is a piece of ancient mythology that found its way into the book of Genesis, much as the stories of Adam & Eve and Noah have their origins in earlier writings from the ancient middle east. Many don’t seem to pay much attention that there are actually two stories of creation, the second being much older than the first. Nothing comes from nothing; the ancient Hebrews used stories and symbolism that would have been readily apparent to the people of the time to explain their place in the world and their relationship with their God. This is one of the reasons I find the first stories in Genesis so fascinating; we can find the foundations of our own Western Civilization in them, reaching back to times that were nothing but a dim memory even to the ancient Hebrews.

Thank you. I can accept the mystery. Many non Christians use this as an argument, though, and I wasn’t sure if there was any new doctrine I wasn’t aware of.

Several years ago I wanted to know about UFO’s in ancient samaria, evidence of technology that we still cannot reproduce with our technology today and real world Giants. The bones of which are reportedly up to 36 feet long, there’s pictures and reports all over the net about Giant bones but nothing trustworthy. The ancient stone engravings turned out to be ones that we can’t reproduce without lasers and merges into the ancient ufo’s interestingly both investigations led me to the Book of Enoch.

The Book of Enoch goes into great detail and provides plausible evidence to support an origin for both ancient ufo’s (angels teaching it to man) and the Giants whom I believe are the basis for the Greek gods. Both end up pointing us back to the same conclusion that’s in the bible.

The angels bred with women and that’s where the Giants came from. Book of Enoch is not included in the bible but it is clear that Moses knew it by heart for him to pull a correct quote from it. If you read it you’ll know why it’s not inluded in the bible.

The bible does indeed say about the Giants getting killed off in the flood but it also says there were giants after the flood as well. Which indicates more angels rebelled at a later date. The pre flood ones had all been locked up. (not satan and his crew that’s a different group) If you read through the old testament that details the wars of King David, you will see 9 giants mentioned as being killed by King David’s army. The last of which was King Og. So yes they are there.

After he got kicked out of the Garden of eden, Adam lived to 930 years old. That’s a lot of time for hundreds of babies and he probably took a daughter as a wife as well not just eve. He could have had 500 babies +.

Staggering isn’t it.

When the first sin entered the world Adam lived to be 70 years short of 1000. Now we only live to 70 or so. That’s probably a reflection on how much sin has entered the world now. do you think?

Do you honestly think that Adam lived to 930? Isn’t there probably a symbolic meaning behind the number? Besides, seeing that there were no calenders nor methods of record keeping, how would the author of Genesis know Adam’s age? I think you may be taking things more literal than intended.

The author of Genesis knew the age because the Holy Spirit told him. If that was symbolic then why did methusela live to 969. If 930 was symbolic for a long time. Why are they all different. It’s not a recurring number like 40. Yes I believe it. Why don’t you?

From the bible 2 Samuel 21:15 During the phillistine wars, King David killed Dadu, Saph, Golliath of Gath, and one other giant all of whom were Rephaim. 1 chronicles 20:4 at Gezer the israelites killed Sippai, a decendant of the rephaim, Lahmi the brother of Golliath of gath, + 1 other giant who was a Rephaim. In Joshuah 12;4 King OG was killed who was also a Rephaim

Uh huh…and just what calendar did they use back then?

I think that you are taking things into places that they aren’t meant to go. Catholics are not fundamentalists who take every word in the Bible as literal truth. One needs the knowledge and education to understand just what, exactly, the ancient authors are trying to say.

You say that Adam “probably” took a daughter as a wife. How do you know this? Where does it say this in the Bible?

Its fairly easy to tell one year. I don’t need a calendar to do that. Four seasons come and go. Count them.
