Gideon New Testament Pocket Bible

I was brought up protestant, and as a result had a lot of things I got rid of when I converted because they were not compatible with my Catholic faith. (KJV study Bible, books by evangelical ministers, etc…) I was digging through one of the boxes from my parents’ attic and came across my old New Testament Gideon Bible. It would be nice to keep this just to have in my purse for when I have a spare moment. Is there a reason I shouldn’t keep it? Being so new to the Church I am trying to be careful about what I read for at least a few years. Thank you for reading this.

How big is your purse?

If I recall correctly, the Gideons use the KJV. I don’t have too many problems with the KJV New Testament. I think there are a few spots where a word with more than one meaning is translated to favor the Protestant slant.

But I know the RSV-CE has a nice compact complete Bible with a zipper, small enough to fit in my purse. It’s about the size of a fattish paperback, but heavier. (The Bible, not my purse!) And though the print is small, these tired old eyes can see it pretty well. They come in boxes, usually. They’re also pretty spendy.

Oh - in case you’re not up on all the acronyms yet - KJV = King James Version, and RSV-CE is the Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition. (Get the 2nd edition.)

There are other copies of the bible which are catholic and which have “Pocket Version” even containing both the Testaments.

I know you could get the Jerusalem Bible “Pocket edition”, if you even really need a pocket book version.

I also have this Gideon one actually, but I would never use it again and should perhaps give it away, but anyway, it’s really your choice if you need a pocket version or not, there are Catholic ones avalible.

I have many of them, the Gideons come out and give them away at the college where I work. I get one every time

I got a Gideons NT and Psalms when at a Catholic secondary school. Yep. Obviously filling in the gap where we Catholics fall short. It got me into reading the New Testament for myself.
(I know Religious whose favourite version is the KJV!)
I’d say no need to ‘get rid’ of your Gideons. Never forget where you came from as they say.
If thats what got you into scripture, and thats your roots, thats ok as far as I can see.
Heck, even just for the sentimental value and that connection with your parents (Honour your father and mother) it is worth keeping. Don’t give yourself scruples over this .
