I thought I’d like to ask in this family forum. 🙂
My Spiritual Director, a priest, has bunch of book, and I am going to dinner with him just before Christmas and I like give him a gift certificate. He has tons of books already, what will be some other ideas, besides food, that you could suggest?

Thanks!

Half-Price Books
Borders
Barnes & Noble
Visa Gift Card (Can be used about any where)
Mastercard Gift Card (Can be used about any where)
Mall Gift Card (Used any where inside the particular mall)

I wasn’t sure if you were talking about the books because you wanted something to do with that or not.

Hope these help.

A massage? Seriously… being a priest can be a very stressful job, and most therapists offer a fully clothed chair-massage option for those who might not want to disrobe for whatever reason. I would say get a big enough certificate that he can choose the regular hour-long massage if he wants to though… that runs about $65.

I meant not to get book for him.

One of these 2 options is easier for me - Could I get this at my bank? Bank of America?

Visa Gift Card (Can be used about any where)
Mastercard Gift Card (Can be used about any where)

Thanks!

Sounds a good idea, but I am afraid that he is probably not going there.

Look into the fees and rules of these just in case, a couple of years ago I was going to get one and the fees and hassle to use them made me decide to get a certified check instead (or was it a money order… lol, I can’t remember which one I got). They may have better deals by now. If not, a plain old check (if you think he will cash it) or cash is good too! 🙂

Somebody suggested not to give them cash or check. I don’t know the reason behind it, that’s why I thought about gift card. 🙂

A lot of priests appreciate the very practical – a gift card to a grocery store, gas station, or jiffy-lube type place to get a tune-up, oil change, etc.

We give our priest a gift certificate to the local golf course. He loves to play on his days off! 🙂

A certificate for Merry Maids (or similar service) to clean his house/parsonage.

Just to throw out a couple of non-standard ideas:
- Some of our friends are Order Priests, and because of their vow of poverty they turn over all cash to their order. We have given them small direct gifts (e.g. a sweater or set of golf balls) or made a donation in their name to their Order or Catholic Charities.
- Spiritual "bouquets" where we have taken on specific prayers (e.g. a rosary each day, a novena, fasting) for the intentions of the Priest. This is sometimes applicabe for diocesan Priests who get a salary and may have all the books, gift cards, etc.they need.

My priest told me several years ago that whatever cash he has in his wallet is usually gone by the end of the day … if he’s visiting or meeting a financially struggling family, he gives them everything he has in his wallet. 👍

I also noted his office is overloaded with rosarys & books. He told me he receives many of each at Christmas and Easter.

Being a jogger, I gave him a gift certificate to a sporting good store. Told me later he got himself some high-end sneakers he normally would never even think about.
