Gift clears the way

In The Book of Proverbs, Chapter 18, Verse 16 states:

A man’s gift clears the way for him, and gains him access to great men.

Please explain.

You can also look at a gift as being a talent.

IMO, seems like that verse means if you ‘donate’ enough money or something valuable to the ‘right’ people, you will have their ear for a short time…kind of like a lobbyist I guess?!

Or, if is referring to God, then maybe it means you must give enough of yourself as a ‘gift’ in order to be in Gods company…??
