Gift for 4 and 7 year old girls

I just bought a car. A few days before, a lady ‘Sophie’ said she use to have one of that make and loved it. While at the dealership, I found out about a program where if I refer someone to the dealership, I can get $150. So I said ‘Sophie referred me, can she please have $150’. They said yes.

Sophie is a single mom with 2 kids. When I told her she almost cried. She then told me she was going to give me $75. Usually I would find this fair but… she is a single mom. I didn’t feel comfortable pointing that out. I don’t want her to feel bad.

I just got the $75. I want to buy her girls a present. With Valentines coming up, I was thinking perhaps a nice basket of candy.

The thing is, when I was a kid, my mom hated when people bought me ‘junkie candy’ or toys that could make a mess in the house.

So, what is a nice gift that a kid could enjoy and mom won’t be upset?

Get them each a cute Valentine tee from Target and use the rest for a gift card for groceries.
 
Well, I think I will have to go to Walmart because all the Targets in Canada closed 😃

What size are 4 and 7 year old girls?
 
It depends so much on the girls!

If it won’t be too much of an inconvenience to the mother to return them, you can include a gift receipt. There is lots of time between now and Valentine’s Day.

A safe bet would be size 4 and 7 in the girls’ department. If they’re tall maybe the next size up. For boys and girls size numbers refer to age (and supposedly average sizes.)

This is very thoughtful! I know a lot of kids also love things like sticker books (I tend to go that route for birthday presents because they can get used up and they’re not messy.) Paper dolls could also be an option.
 
I always shopped one size ahead of age and this worked well in my family.
Gifts that a mom on a tight budget might appreciate might include a zoo pass, or tickets to the children’s museum, or science center, or a play or musical that they might otherwise not be able to attend with their children.

So much depends on the kids. I have four kids - and my two girls are age 8 and 6 - so I’m not too far removed. It’s wonderful that you are thinking of giving some of this windfall back - and in a way that is not embarrassing to the mother.

My 8 year old would love nothing better than a gift card to a bookstore where she could pick out any book - but she just loves to read. She also is really into sports - and anything to do with soccer or baseball would be well-received.

My 6 year old loves to dance - and she loves girly things (unlike her older sister). We were just talking about it this weekend, and she would cherish a charm bracelet where people could add to it with adventures in the future.

(I just point this out that my two girls are very different - and something that one of them would have loved - the other would have avoided).

Both of my girls love going to plays (although we find that they love a high school play as much as going to the downtown theater, and the price is unbeatable. (Around here, Valentine’s day is about the time that high school musical plays are beginning. If the girls are into something like that - you could find a high school play in your area. give each of the girls a couple of dollars to spend on the treats that they offer at intermission. I don’t know if Sophie is a good friend of yours - or more of an acquaintance. If she is a friend - then you could offer to take the girls and give her a night off (or day - if a matinee would be more workable)- or take Sophie with the girls.

Other things that my kids enjoyed at those ages are art-supplies. Paper, markers, crayons, etc.

Just avoid any gift that makes noise.

My guess is that Sophie will be gracious about any kind of gift that you give.

Yes, this. Don’t worry so much about sizes. Even if you up size and it’s a bit too big, a t-shirt can also be used as a sleep shirt or just lay around the house shirt. I think the gift card would be most helpful and then mom can decide if she needs groceries, more clothes, books or whatever.

Well it would depend on their sizes.

On average, kids clothing at that age here in the US is sized according to age.

So a size four should fit a four year old.

A size seven should fit a seven year old.
 
There is a chain of stores in Canada called ‘The children’s place’. Not sure if you have it in the states. I am thinking of getting something there so it will be hopefully a bit nicer quality than Walmart, ie a little treat.

I am NOT good friends with Sophie and she actually drives in from out of town so taking her kids might not be a good idea. However, I asked her if her girls were big or small for their age (I think she suspects something is up :D) She said they were small so I will get size 4 and 7

I went on line and I was thinking of buying a shirt with little hearts and one with a penguin
 
I suggest a book or two on some science subject. Keep it easy. Ask your local library for advice.
