Gift For Goddaughter?

Hello -

My friend had asked me to be godfather to his daughter many years ago, fifteen to be exact. He and the mother of the child had a falling out and she wouldn’t allow him to see her because of all kinds of drama going on in those days, much less did I have many chances to see her. Fast forward to today and he is now much more involved and is now really getting the opportunity to be a father. Apparently she mentioned that she wants to meet her godfather ,which I will be doing this Sunday.

I’m a recent revert Catholic, so this is all new to me. I haven’t seen her since she was one, and I don’t recall ever buying her a gift back then that you would give to a goddaughter. Do I even bother at this point? I feel like it could be appropriate, but then again she’s 15 now. Any thoughts? If yes, then does anyone have any suggestions?? Thanks so much.

Just be there for her. Speak to her about your faith journey and how important it is to you.
Invite her and her parent to dinner, things where you have someone else there with you to ease the awkwardness, but still be able to share. Like your wife, or lady friend if you have one. If you want to bring a gift, maybe a gift card to Amazon so she can buy something she likes or needs for school. But honestly, it sounds like she’s seeking someone who understands HER faith journey, or she wants to begin one or resume one.
How lovely that you care enough to guide her through the treacherous teen years.
Tell her you and your spouse can give her a ride to Adoration sometimes.
Things like that.

Thanks for your advice, PianistClare! I decided to forego the small gift and just have a conversation. It was awesome! She asked a few questions, and I even told her the story about the day she was baptized at the age of around close to one year and she was waving to the congregation and they were waving back. Cutest thing ever, and she loved the story. Good stuff. Her and her father will be coming again to visit since they loved the downtown area where I live. Thanks again for your time!
