Gift For Ordination

A member of my parish is going to be ordained a Deacon this Friday, a step on his way to becoming a priest in May. I have never been to an ordination Mass and would like to know what a good, and possibly unique, gift would be for this young man. I know money is always an option, but I really don’t like to give money because, for me, it looks as if I didn’t put any thought or time into getting the gift.

So, any suggestions on what to give somebody at their ordination?

I have the same question – but seven months left to get an answer. I would LIKE to find an icon of the seven deacons from the Acts – but I have never heard of one. Anybody got a lead?

I just gave our deacon candidate a small (REALLY small!) icon of St. Stephen. A good one of respectable size might be a nice gift.

An icon of St. Lawrence might be a good gift. This is a call to remember the poor who really are the treasure of the Church. Something appropriate for deacons and priests. Monastery Icons has a good selection.

We had a seminarian at our parish this past year and I got to know him through the myriad of talks our pastor made him give. Many of us were invited to both his ordination to Deacon and to Priest. One thing we found out is that he was an avid buyer of books.

Since I could not think of anything to get him when he was ordained to the Priesthood, I got him a gift certificate at the Pauline Book Store in the area.

When they asked who it was for, I mentioned his name without saying he was being ordained and they asked me if I wanted “Father” in front of his name. It seems he is a frequent visitor to the store.

Last year we gave the new deacons a silver cover for the book of the Gospels.
