My DGS has a myriad of severe allergies. My DD enrolled him in her local Catholic school for pre-school, and is very, very happy with the support she gets from the school to accommodate his allergies.

The aide in the room is a sister, and she sits at DGS’s table at snack time to ensure that he doesn’t eat anything from anyone else’s snacks. She’s been very kind, and DD is very grateful. She would like to give Sister a gift at Christmas, but says, “What do you give a nun?” She’s also the room mother and will be getting the class gifts.

I’m not much help; the last gift I remember giving when I was in school was a black shawl, which is something I haven seen a sister use in many, many years. When DD was in school, I remember sending fruit baskets and the like to the convent, but I’m not even sure if the convent at the school is even used; the one in our parish was sold when the last woman religious moved into a private house. I vaguely remember being told that a bank gift card which could be used to buy presents for family members was appreciated, but I don’t know if she would be allowed to keep a gift like that. I Googled her and found that she belongs to the Dominican Sisters of Hope, if that makes any difference.

Any suggestions, either for DD’s gift or the class one?

A gift card to a bookstore is always appropriate for a teacher.

This sister chose an order that espouses a simple lifestyle. I think it would be OK to give a gift that she will share with the other sisters or that will go towards the work of her order. She might also enjoy an invitation to share a meal with your family. (My relatives who are religious sisters always enjoyed that.)

When you write the note to her, be sure to also promise to pray that she will have the gift of perseverance to continue her beautiful generosity throughout her life and also that you will pray for vocations to her order of sisters, so that there will be more holy women following in her footsteps, to be her co-workers and successors. Then follow through and do add her to your prayers. Keep in touch with her over the years, and let her know you are still praying for her.

The World Day for Consecrated Life is Feb. 2; that is an excellent time to send her a card, thanking her again and reminding her that you are praying for her and for all the sisters in her order, and for vocations to her community.
