“Teaching about God’s Gift of Forgiveness” is the theme for Catechetical Sunday.

It is nice that we are taught about FORGIVENESS.
However, is it not important that we forgive?

Of course it is important that we forgive. “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.” However, I think it is fine on the coming Catachetical Sunday to focus on God’s forgiveness.

In the Mass readings and homilies, don’t we already hear a lot about forgiving one another? It is relatively easy for us to see the consequences in our lives when we sin against one another. Similarly, when we forgive one another, we can personally experience the benefits.

Reconciling with God is somehow different. Many of us (here I speak from my own experience, of course) cannot clearly see or feel the effects of sin on our relationship with God, and therefore may not perceive or recognize the benefits of his forgiveness. If we better understood the gift of God’s forgiveness, perhaps more Catholics would go regularly to Confession, live more virtuously, and glorify God by their lives.

Therefore I think it is very good that the theme of Catechetical Sunday 2014 is “Teaching About God’s Gift of Forgiveness.”
