How do I find out what charism(s) I have? I want to use it, but I dont’ know what it is! Any hints?

A very good question. I wish there was a simple answer.

Through prayer and discernment. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you and to give you the opportunity to find out, to test them.

Listen to what people say (e.g. do they say you have a gift for …).

Reflect on the different ways you serve God and whether some seem to be more productive than you might expect. For example you might have a natural gift (for music say) that seems to be more productive when put in God’s service.

Just a few thoughts. I’m struggling here. Discernment of gifts is a difficult one.
 
Okay, so I have the ability to read Scripture with emotion (not acting, but just…powerfully) so is that one of my Gifts?

Perhaps others think speaking in tongues is possible.

As Steve99 quoted passages from the Bible where it says it happens. I attend a Charismatic Church twice a month and there are people there that can speak in tongues. I don’t doubt at all that they can. The Priest himself can also. He is actually the best Priest I have encountered, and I don’t think for a moment he is lying or making it up. If you listened to him preach, then you would know the Holy Spirit is speaking through him. If God can give the gifts of the Holy Spirit as per the Bible, 2,000 years ago, why on earth cannot he not still now. Of course he does.

I personally have no gifts that I know of, but I pray for them all the time.
 
Who determines if the persons speaking in tongues are doing so trough the Holy Spirit?:confused:

I think only a Bishop can say if a person posses an “extraordinary” gift of the Spirit. (I might be wrong though)
 
I believe the Holy Spirit still does give the extraordinary gifts today, but just not on as wide a scale as He did in the earliest years of the Church.

I am cautious of some in the Charismatic movement, however, as I don’t think that the Holy Spirit would cause people to roll on the floor oinking like pigs, which I understand is part of the
“Toronto Blessing.”

Also, I attended an otherwise wonderful Marian conference back in 1998, and one of the Priests was a charismatic, and when he spoke in tongues it looked and seemed like he was faking it.
He would throw his head back in mid sentence and shout,
“Shamaloo !! wa-wa-wa-wa, lah lah lah gag gwah.”
It just didn’t seem very real to me, but forced.

Still, people have been healed of diseases in the Charismatic movement, so I am not totally skeptical of it, just cautious.

This is interesting. Do you have any examples of this?

As an aside, I too have seen a Charasmatic healing mass. It was something I will never forget, try as I might.
 
Hi Damascus, no unfortunately I can’t give you any examples cuz the things I’m thinking of were over 10 years ago, and I didn’t keep any notes or documentation. I should have. Now it’s all anecdotal. For example, the minister who witnessed a deformed mans leg grow by like, six inches, to match the other leg in length, etc.

If a Christian tells me they have any of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, I would take them at their word based on them being a Christian. As far as I know honesty is most important to a Christian. I’m also not sure why a Christian would lie about something like this, what would be their motive?
The Bible and St.Paul say it happens, and that is good enough for me. I believe them, not the personal opinion of parishioners who think its silly.

Its not a matter for me anyway to consider any “silly” factor into it.
The question is not about sincere belief of having the gift of speaking in tonuges.
The question is whether anyone is able to be qualifyed to discern if in fact the person is speaking from the Holy Spirit or not.

Not all tongue speaking does come from the Holy Spirit.

And if so, who would this person be?

That is all I am asking if your post was directed at my comments. So far, I have not gotten a conclusive answer.
 
Sorry Damascus, this wasn’t directed at you, but an earlier post by someone else who thought people speaking in tongues is nonesense, and they must obviously be putting it on…
