Well here we have an example of a brat gone off the wall. This girl should be ashamed of herself. No parent owes their kid a college education, and if you are living in your parents house you abide by their rules, even if you are in your 20’s or 30’s etc.

If she is so “grown-up” she should go get her GED, get a job and pay for her own schooling. This is more about her wanting to be with a boy her parents don’t approve of, and being an ungrateful snot. I would do exactly what her parents did, and I would not pay her current school one more dime. I am glad the judge has ruled against her so far.

No 18 year old “magically” turns into this. There has been misfunction going on in this family for a long time, I’m quite sure.

I heard about this, too. There was a link in another thread but I don’t know where it is.

I think it’s an entitlement complex. Kids grow up being handed everything they want and then they get upset when their parents show disapproval and will not give them what they want. They do not know how to cope with disapproval or not getting what they want.

She wants to move out and have her parents pay for her new place (she could be living at home), the rest of her high school (she goes to a private school), and her college education. To get her parents’ money while not obeying their rules.

The law needs to side with the parents on this one. She is 18 now and how long will parents have to support their children if she wins? 21? 25? 35?!

She is on her own now and can get a job to pay her bills, and study online to get her GED. If she doesn’t want to live under her parents’ roof then she needs to support herself. Being on her own means being on her own.

My guess is that her parents spoiled her as a young kid, and she is just acting out the way she was raised. My mantra for parents of young kids is “If you don’t say no to them now while they are little, they won’t be able to say no to themselves as teens and young adults.” I came up with that in the early 90s when a couple who were my friends were spoiling their two boys. Both boys became heroin addicts, neither has held a job for long, and they go in and out of jail even after age 30.

Very likely. They probably spoiled her and then cracked down when they realized that spoiling her was leading to bad behavior. Quelle horreur!

To me, the real villains involved in this case are the third-party family that “took her in” for months. They have abrogated the authority of this girl’s actual parents and it’s thoroughly disgusting behavior. One can expect even a good student in his/her teen years to rebel, threaten to run away or even make good on that threat for a couple of days. It’s not good, but it falls in the range of “normal” behavior.

What’s insane is that another set of parents would do anything other than take her in from the streets… then immediately call her own parents to bring her home. What’s even more insane is clearly they are helping in the legal battle here. It’s beyond despicable.

I thought I saw a clip of the dad who is letting the girl stay with them…he’s an attorney, and was being interviewed on one of the news stations. I told my husband he was probably looking for free publicity for his own business, that’s why he’s doing it. You know they will make the rounds of the tv shows now. Disgusting.

You are more than likely correct. I have to wonder if the boyfriend lives here. I say shame on these parents.

We were raised with the expectation that my folks would help with College as long as we paid them back at the end of each semester and had a job while going to school. Otherwise we were expected to move out and start our own lives.

Help was requested when needed, appreciated when received, loans were paid back and we never felt entitled to any of it. If our parents had to work their “fanny” off to get where they got, then we expected we would have to do the same. This girl is horrible and should be ashamed of herself.

You could be right. But I do know of cases in which this was not true. There can be children who just have an attitude that live is owed to them and all the benefits served on a silver platter. They are known as sociopaths.

I am aware of a woman, who even as a child, expected everyone to do her bidding. They didn’t and she had fits. When she got out on her own she disowned her family out-right.
She is a real piece of work.

Yep, so true.

This too! It is truly disgusting how that family “took her in” and undermined the parents and in every way possible. I saw pics online of her in court and you could tell she was po’d that the judge wasn’t giving her her way.

I think this case is ridiculous.

But to all of you posting this, hear me on this: you think she’s a brat, but I’ll tell you, as an 18 year old college student myself, I can tell you, there’s a lot more of her type than you might think. Some of you know that I posted a bit of a rant on here a while ago because I realized that I can’t really talk to m/any of my peers about anything serious, even at a good Catholic college.

So, again, I think this is absurd, but honestly, I’m not surprised: it’s the way far too many people in my generation think.

I agree that there are a lot of bratty teenagers out there, I sure was one just a few years ago, but never to the point of ever disrespecting my parents in this manner. I moved out when I was 18 because I didn’t want to follow their rules and “live my life” but as soon as I moved out I actually learned to appreciate my parents for everything. It make me very grateful and brought everyone even closer. Of course it made me the responsible, independent youngster I am today. So my point is, if she wants to act like an adult and move out, she better be prepared to face the consequences. 🤷
