Girls?

Concerning marriage proposals, the man should definitely do it. Like someone above said, both parties have already discussed it usually anyway. I think it’s just a nice tradition. Plus, would the woman get her man a ring? Too weird.

As for dating, I don’t think it’s a big deal for the girl to ask the guy out. It’s funny, I actually was asked out by a girl a couple weeks ago. If I wasn’t in love with the most amazing girl already, I would probably have given her a shot. I will say, shutting someone down gently is tough. I can definitely empathize now with the girls I have put on the spot in the past 😃 .

I think a man should do it. Here’s why.

Firstly, I think it is a mark of courage and self-sacrifice that he would rather put his heart on the line than allow her to do so. He would rather he risk getting hurt - she should only be protected.

Secondly, as it is explained in JP2’s Theology of the Body - men are designed to initiate, women to reciprocate. If men are not allowed to discover this role they will never grow into their role as head of the family.

Thirdly, if I guy really likes you he will ask you out. If he really loves you he will propose. If he dosn’t love/like you enough to do these things then quite frankly you deserve better!
Men need to BE men! The should be encouraged to be self-sacrificing as Christ loved the Church.

I guess I was raised “old- fashioned” too. THe guy should be the one to ask any question regarding relationship stuff any further than friendship.

turboEDvo,
Personally, I wouldnt have it any otherway. I’m 16, so far I havent broughten home any guys. But I know as soon as I find a guy I think is special enough, I’m bringin him home.

So what does everyone think about this? It was actually something I have thought about, but I’m not sure how I feel. Any (name removed by moderator)ut would be lovely.
I don’t really like the practice. A woman is not her father’s property, and she doesn’t need his permission to get married.

If a man needs to ask the father’s permission to marry the daughter, the father should be providing a dowry too. Two cows, a dozen chickens, and 50 pieces of silver.

LOL But for me, when it comes to marriage proposals, I think a guy should do it, since it is representative of male and female roles that God has assigned us to.

Dating, it’s a meh thing, but it seems to still train in popular culture when a guy does it; it’s a guy thing 😃

As a teenager of 16, this is merely my perspective; I wish not to represent the teenage population when I belong to the group of geeks in the hierarchal teen kingdom 😉

This is why the whole issue of asking a father for his daughter’s hand in marriage makes me a tad bit uncomfortable. I think that most people-at least in the South-do it for respect issues. You know, to honor the parents. I am still uncomfortable with it though, but I understand the reasoning behind the practice.

Should girls ask guys out?

Should a woman propose to her boyfriend instead of waiting for him to do it?
I don’t know but if it’s not right for girls to ask guys out or for a woman to propose to her boyfriend but the guy you want to go out with or the boyfriend you want to marry is not taking the iniative to do it, then you could say: “If you ask me out, I’ll probably say yes” or “If you propose to me, I’ll probably say yes” 😛

I think whoever could ask the other on a date.

As far as wedding proposals. I’m not really into the “Surprise, wanna marry me?” pop the question type of proposal. I would say that the couple needs to really pray individually and together to discern if God is calling them to marriage. Ultimately it isn’t the man and woman’s desires that determine whether they get married or not, it should be that they are called by God and it is their vocation.

God is good! Praise him!!! :bowdown2:

You are right–it’s a much bigger thing in the south. My husband was the product of a very traditional upbringing-- his father’s family having come from the Carolinas. But I have to say my highly educated, professional, “Yankee” father to this day loves to tell the story of how he was asked permission before any proposal was made. It set a good course for a mutually respectful relationship–something which knows no geographic limits.

My wife asked me out on our first date, which was a very casual kind of thing. Although it was only a matter of time before I would have asked her out. We had known each other for a couple of years, and I think we both knew there was some mutual attraction.

I was the one who officially proposed marriage, with the ring and all, but I would humbly submit that, when that moment comes, the question (and the response) isn’t a surprise - the couple should definitely have some pretty deep and involved conversations about marriage before the proposal ever happens, and the couple mutually comes to an understanding that they are meant to get married. So in a sense, the proposal is kind of a formality - you know it’s coming, you just don’t necessarily know how or when.

I agree with Bobby Jim. A couple should have talked about marriage, kids, the future, etc. long before the actual proposal. It shouldn’t really be a surprise that the man proposes. The surprise should be in when, where, and how he does so.

ask on a date, maybe but i’d lean towards no

ask to marry, no way

Ask on a date? Sure, as long as it is nothing too romantic. But not more than once or twice. If he doesn’t get around to asking you after that… well, ask someone else.

Ask to marry? The subject shouldn’t be off-limits. Still, if it has become taboo from too much “hypothetical” discussion and you think you need to fish or cut bait, you might start discussing “hypothetically” whether the two of you should start dating other people. He may need to have the fear of losing you put into his heart… or he may be such a coward that he needs permission to get lost.

I don’t know if the guy should ask, but it is more fun. But if he won’t ask, then for heaven’s sake, don’t answer! (“If I asked, would you say “yes”?” “Well, when you ever get around to asking, I’ll try to have an answer.”)
